October 21-22. 2017 1-4 p.lll, Smervign Wm*, 7 West River Street Free Admission received | Riziero Vertolli/Metroland The Bronte Historical Society hosted Trafalgar Day, Oct. 21 and 22, to commemorate the Battle of Trafaglar fought on Oct. 21, 1805. The Battle of Trafal gar was a naval battle Admiral Horatio Nelson was the admiral who won the battle. At top right, volunteer Barry Catley works on the display case. A visitor makes her way into the display at Sovereign House on West Rive Street. At far left, a visitor views a model of the Victory, Lord Nelson's ship. This year marked the 212th anniversary of the famous battle. Under the leadership of Nelson with his unique naval tactics, 33 British ships won a decisive battle against a combined fleet of 40 French and Spanish ships, which changed the course of history. Nelson was killed during the battle and his body was preserved on the voyage back to Britain. Based on the research by the Society's historical Intern, Serena Holmes, and volunteer Historian, Betty Strong, the display material features aspects of Lord Nelson's colorful life and the Battle of Trafalgar including a diorama with miniature ships. A highlight of the exhibits is an authentic original Lord Nelson letter of Nov. 23, 1804 on loan from Nelson High School in Burlington. John McDonald also gave a talk about local place names such as Palermo, Trafalgar, Bronte and others associated with Lord Nelson and the Battle. Visitors were also treated to a slice of Victory Rum Cake. The Bronte Historical Society founded in 1985 is a volunteer run nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving Bronte's heritage and celebrating its past.
