OSC honours players, coaches,volunteers at annual ceremonies The Oakville Soccer Club put the spotlight on a number of people who are among the more than 1,000 volunteers who help run the OSC programs each year. The 13th annual Volunteer Recognition and Awards Ceremony was held at Le Dome Banquet Hall last week. "OSC volunteers have shown time and again why they are so valuable to the orga nization and we could not provide our mem bership with the level of excellence expected without their help," executive director Dave Harris said. "The contribution of our vol unteers is second to none among sports or ganizations and we are proud to have such important members within the club." Volunteer roles include house league coach, house league convener, ADP and RDP volunteer coaches, team managers/officials, Breaking Barriers program volunteers, board members, committee members, events vol unteers and camp volunteers. Awards presented include: · Rep Coach of the Year, presented to a coach who has made an outstanding contri bution to the development and success of an OSC Rep Team, went to Steve Fletcher (male team) and Rumi Jasavala (female team) · Outstanding Youth Player, presented to a player who has demonstrated dedication to the sport and an attitude that drives im provement, achievement and success, to Lu cas Russo (male) and Julia Semple (female) · Referee awards, to those who have divisions who demonstrate sportsmanship, skill development and a commitment to their team. The Ontario Junior Hockey League game was played last Sunday in Whitby. Thomas Maia broke a 1-1 tie with what proved to be the winning goal for the Blades early in the second pe riod just minutes after the Fury had tied the score. Zach Bramwell followed with two goals for Oakville, the second with Whitby on the power play, and Jacob Buch, who opened the scoring in the first period, added his second of the game to give the Blades a 5-1 lead after two periods. In a penalty-filled third period, which fea tured three misconducts and two majors, Bramwell added Oakville's last goal on the power play Nick Boehmer earned a fighting major and misconduct for the Blades while Whitby's Mark Kennedy had the same penalties with an extra gross misconduct penalty tacked on. Blades goalie Chris Elliot stopped 20 shots to earn the victory. The two points moved Oakville (13-3-2-1) to within a point of the first-place George town Raiders in the West Division standings, although the Raiders have a game in hand. Last Saturday, the Blades doubled the Lind say Muskies 6-3 at Sixteen Mile Sports Com plex. While both teams failed on seven powerplay opportunities, Lindsay did even worse on special teams, allowing two shorthanded goals, including one to Andrew McIntyre to just 1:41 into the game. Another shorthanded effort by Peyton Reeves, his second goal of the contest, gave the Blades their biggest lead of the night at 5-1. Other Oakville goals came from Teth Burles, Buch and Maia. Jack Ricketts and Mat thew Kellenberger contributed two assists each. Elliot stopped 19 shots to pick up the vic tory. The night before at Sixteen Mile, Reeves' power-play goal 5:49 into the third period broke a 1-1 tie with Orangeville as the Blades edged the Flyers 3-2. Ricketts had given Oakville a 1-0 lead in the first but the Flyers tied it midway through the period. McIntyre extended the Blades' lead to 3-1 with 7:19 remaining in the third period but Orangeville got back to within a goal by con necting with 1:47 remaining. Elliot had a busy night, stopping 31 shots for the victory over the Flyers, second in the West Division.
