Friday, October 8,1999 * $ THE OAKVILLE BEAVER 7 Oakville w om an wins Pud international police award An Oakville resident, Ontario Provincial Police Inspector Robin McElary-Downer, has been named 1999 Officer o f the Year by the International Association of Women Police (IAWP). McElary-Downer, who is manager of the OPP's First Nations Section, was selected over 40 other nominees and recognized for her leadership, community service, mentoring and excellence ia performance. McElary-Downer will be presented with her award during the 1999 IAWP annual conference to be held'Oct. 10th to 14th in Philadelphia. "I am deeply honoured and humbled to have been considered for such an award," said McElary-Downer. "It is truly a testament to the support of my family and fellow members of the OPP." OPP Commissioner Gwen Boniface said McElary-Downer's "immense tal ents and numerous skills" make her very deserving o f the prestigious award. "In a year when the OPP celebrates its 90th Anniversary, plus a quarter cen tury of service by its female officers, it is very rewarding to see an individual such as Insp. McElary-Downer hon oured on an international level." McElary-Downer, who is married to a Peel Regional officer and is a mother of two children, became the OPP's first female D etachm ent Com m ander in 1992, taking command of the Port Credit Detachment. As Manager of the First Nations Section, McElary-Downer actively par ticipates in the management of 33 First Nations communities in Ontario which fall under OPP jurisdiction. She is responsible for 83 constables who police these communities. McElary-Downer also has a wide breadth of experience, having held positions in everything from surveil lance to anti-rackets.
