Firefighters are reminding residents to watch that holiday cooking noting that careless cooking is the number one cause of fires in Ontario and the second leading cause of fatal fires. "Your risk of having a fire can increase dramatically over the holidays," stated Deputy Fire Chief Monique Belair in a press release. "All too often, these fires are started by unattended cooking or smoking and in many cases alcohol is involved," said the deputy chief. As part of the campaign, the Oakville Fire Department is inviting hockey fans to join them for a Night with the Oakville Blades on Dec. 8 at Sixteen Mile Sports Com plex where the Blades will host a Teddy Bear Toss in support of Oakville Fire' s annual holiday toy drive. Residents who donate a new, unwrapped stuffed animal will have their name entered into prize draws between periods. The game starts at 7 :3 0 p.m. For tickets, visit oakvilleblades.com. The Oakville Fire Department is also reminding residents that it is the law to have a working smoke alarm on every storey of the home and outside all sleeping areas of a residence. "Be sure to take time to test your smoke alarms and practice an escape plan so that everyone in your home knows exactly what to do in an emergency," added Belair. The Oakville Fire Department is offering the following tips this holiday season: · Stay in the kitchen when cooking. If a pot catches fire, don't try to move it. Cover the pot with a lid to smother the flames and turn off the burner · Keep things that can burn such as cooking utensils and paper towels a safe distance from the stove · Keep an eye on anyone drinking alcohol and make sure all cigarettes are properly extinguished and the stove is off before going to bed · Check sofas and chairs for cigarettes that may have fallen between the cushions.
