Earlier this year the police services board sought and received feedback from victims of sex assault about their dealings with case investigators -- some individuals were impressed and thankful for the help and some said they had bad experiences with law enforcement personnel in the aftermath of their ordeal. Halton Regional Police Services Board Executive Director Julie Moscato delivered a report, on behalf of the relatively new 14-member Sexual Assault Advisory Committee, on input received from people who reported sex assault incidents to Halton police. Survivors of sex assault were asked to respond to one of two scenarios -- their experience with Halton police if they reported such an assault or the reason(s) why they chose not to report such an incident to Halton police. Comments were collected in June and July. The police services board' s Sexual Assault Case Handling Review Team says it received five email submissions, 15 via online and had nine telephone or in-person meetings. The report notes that no self-identified people from marginalized communities, such as immigrant refugees, LGBTQ+ or Aboriginal Peoples, responded to the survey. The review team stressed that it does not know how new or old the cases/incidents cited by sex assault victims are. "Some of the information provided during in-person meetings was clearly identified as recent," stated the report. "... some experiences were recent, some were not. I don't have enough information to make a determination around whether there were more recent or more historical experiences," Moscato told The Oakville Beaver.
