NEWS 13 Chamber puts out wish list for 2018 provincial election OAKVILLE CHAMBER -------------- o f --------------- COMMERCE • GET CONNECTED Have a comment on this or any other community issues? Email us at newsroom@insidehalton.com The 2018 provincial election may not be until June, but the Oakville business community is already stating what they would like to see from the political par ties. Late last year, the Oakville Chamber of Commerce in partner ship with the Ontario chamber released Vote Prosperity, a platform and campaign outlining the Ontario business community's priorities for the upcoming 2018 provincial election. The campaign lists a series of recommenda tions, which the cham bers say all political par ties should adopt to en sure growth for the prov ince's economy. "Small businesses are the backbone of Oak ville's economy; they support working families in our local community and across the province, and th a t's why candi dates from every party in every community will become fam iliar with Vote Prosperity," said John Sawyer, president of the Oakville Chamber. "Ontario's business community is prepared to be bold, and with Vote Prosperity, we are seek ing to motivate our politi cal leaders to follow." Vote Prosperity is based on four pillars, which are: • Strengthening busi ness competitiveness - Rising input costs, espe cially those costs deriv ing from government regulation and policy, are the most common and acute concern of the business community in Ontario. • Fostering job cre ation - A robust labour m arket consisting of good jobs is essential to prosperity for all O ntari ans. • Building healthy communities - Building strong communities through adequate and af fordable housing, sus tainable health care and good infrastructure also supports business pros perity and growth, which supports these commu nities. • Improving govern ment accountability - Poor implementation of government initiatives can result in resource waste, political fru stra tion and disruption for ordinary citizens. "Ontario businesses have made it clear that the ever-rising costs of doing business from all levels of government has hindered their ability to prosper and grow," said Karl Baldauf, vice-presi dent of policy and gov ernm ent relations with the Ontario chamber. "Our objective is to achieve coherent, com prehensive pro-growth policies from all political parties. Our recommen dations provide a pros perous path forward, be cause when you vote for prosperity, Ontario wins." Vote Prosperity pro vides 18 unique recom mendations intended to help bolster Ontario's long-term economic fu ture, while addressing some of the pressing is sues Ontario faces. These recommenda tions include: • Reinstating sched uled reductions in the corporate income tax, standardizing the busi ness education tax and reducing the employer health tax. • Conducting and pub lishing the results for a comprehensive review of the electricity sector, in cluding an objective eco nomic impact analysis assessing the full range of inputs that make up the global adjustment (GA), and then pursuing cost-reducing m easures based on the results. • Focusing on strategic growth policies by ensur ing that land use plan ning and development regulations are aligned, to increase density and create more housing stock. • Creating a m eaning ful plan to tackle the debt and move toward bal anced or surplus bud gets. Over the coming months, ahead of the 2018 election, the Ontario chamber network will be voicing the concerns and recommendations out lined in Vote Prosperity with political parties and local MPPs and candi dates. During the election, local chambers will be hosting debates where Vote Prosperity will be the prim ary focus of dis cussion.
