Because if you Stop, Drop, and Roll, you will put out the Make sure to have your hands cover your face- just like Sparky-and roll and roll and roll until the flames are out. DROP The following are questions that Fire Prevention Officers respond to most frequently. 1. Q. Is it a requirement to have smoke alarms in my home? A. The Ontario Fire Code requires that smoke alarms be installed between each sleeping area and the remainder of the building. Where a sleeping area is served by a hallway, install the alarm in the hall. Always install the smoke alarm on or near the ceiling in accordance with the manufacturer's installation instructions. 2. Q. Where can I get my fire extinguisher recharged or serviced? A. If you look in the yellow pages under "Fire Protection Equipment" or "Fire Extinguishers," you will find several companies that can provide this service. 3. Q. What should I do if a grease fire occurs on my stove or in my oven? A. Never pour water on a cooking fire. If a pan of food ignites, carefully slide a lid over the pan and turn off the burner. Keep the lid on until complete ly cooled. If a fire starts in your oven, close the oven door and turn off the heat source. If the flames do not go out immediately, call the Fire Department. 4. Q. Where does carbon monoxide occur? A. A common and potentially harmful by-product of appliances that run on flammable fuel, carbon monoxide is emitted by gas or oil furnaces, gas- powered refrigerators or gas clothes dryers, water heaters, fireplaces, wood stoves, charcoal grills, and gas ranges. A clogged chimney or run ning a vehicle in an attached garage can cause problems as well. 5. Q. Where should I install my carbon monoxide alarm? A. The Oakville Fire Department recommends that every home be equipped with at least one carbon monoxide (CO) alarm near the sleeping area of the home. Because CO mixes freely with air, it doesn't need to be mount ed near the ceiling. Unlike smoke alarms, CO alarms can be placed at any height in your home from the floor to the ceiling.
