Students enjoy history, culture (Continued from page B4) After visiting scenic Twillingate, the main port for Newfoundland's once lucrative sealing industry, we toured Cape Bonavista. Legend has it that this promontory was so named by Italian navigator Giovanni Caboto, (John Cabot to the English), who sponsored his voyage to the New World on the caravel Matthew, two years after Columbus. Allegedly Cabot cried something to the effect of "Bueno Vista!", upon admiring his view after landing in a cove near the cape. As the wind buffeted our group atop the deso late cliffs we couldn't help but admire the tenacity of such early explorers. In Placentia Bay, we enjoyed a overnight stay at Woody Island, an abandoned outport accessible only by boat. Upon the advice of friends we booked our Woody Island Adventures excursion and it proved to be a fabu lous experience for all. . Watching my students fishing with makeshift poles in a steady drizzle off the wharf and playing with the island dog reminded me of what simple plea sures can entertain kids. For the adults we also slipped into a' mode of total relaxation, reading (or snoozing) by a comfortable fire in the main lounge of the rustic inn in which we stayed. Later, home cooked meals of fresh baked bread, pan fried cod and garden grown vegetables were wolfed down eagerly. We enjoyed a gift of snow crabs from a local fisherman and some lobster purchased nearby was appreciated as much as the $4 a pound purchase price at the wharf. Later that night, a gentleman by the name of Gerome, entertained us with local folk music played on instruments such as the accordion, guitar, spoons and an ingenious local creation called the 'ugly stick', made of washers nailed to a rough hewn stick. Our wonderful Newfoundland experience finished with a three day stay with friends of fellow chaperone Sarah Hume in historic St. John's. On a day trip to nearby Witless Bay we mar veled at sea cliffs covered with kitti- wakes, murres and puffins. From the vantage of Captain Larry's tour boat we witnessed spectacular fog banks which appeared out of nowhere, reminding us that the sunny, warm weather we'd enjoyed for most of our journey is not always typical in Newfoundland. After a magical 10 days and over 3,200 kilometers of adventure on the opert road (and boat) we boarded our direct flight to Toronto. On the way home, Tyler Sgro was writing a thank you card to one of our hosts. Upon sharing it with me, I was struck by one of his comments. He said that of all the wonderful new memories he had, the one he would cherish most was his impression of Newfoundland's people. As I looked out the window at the mighty St. Lawrence below us I couldn't help but think, amidst my uncontrollable grin that Tyler was wise beyond his years. As Tyler had learned, Newfoundland is one of Canada's greatest treasures, but the gift of her beauty is matched only by the warmth of her people.
