The festival consists of workshops, each centred around creating a lasting, dec orative piece for your home. All of the workshops, detailed below, will take place at Paradiso's on Lakeshore Road at Navy St., from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (See 'Harvest' page C6) Wall colour can change shape of your room It's all about perception. Paint color can actually change our perception of the size and shape of the space itself. The right color in the right place for exam ple, can make a room appear larger and brighter, or more intimate and less empty. It can even make a long and narrow room look more square-shaped, or vice-versa. Here's a general guideline offered by paint manufacturer SICO: To make a room appear: • Larger: use a pale color to create the impression that the walls are further away. • Brighter: use a pale shade, like a cool blue or green. • Smaller: use a dark color to make the room more intimate and less empty. Reds and earth shades for example, give the impression that walls are closer to us. To change the perception of room shape: • Long & Narrow to Square: paint the shorter walls in a darker color than the longer ones. • Square to Long & Narrow: paint the two facing walls you wish to look longer in a lighter color. To choose a finish: Flat, no-gloss paints add richness and depth to the color of your room. Today, even high-traffic household areas like hallways, playrooms, bathrooms and kitchens can hold up easily with a gloss-free, but washable paint. For more information on paints of this kind, refer to the Cashmere collection on the SICO web site, www.sico.com -NC P lan t bulbs now In return for just a few hours spent planning and planting this fall, you can achieve spectacu lar spring colour with maximum impact Just pop some bulbs into the soil, and stand back. It's as easy as that to achieve bril liant spring colour. And between now and mid-November is the time for plant ing. Perhaps, the biggest tempta tion when planti ng bulbs, is to dot a few here and there throughout the garden. Although it's always a delight to see any flash of colour after the grey days of win ter, you can easily achieve far more beautiful results... Elements of design Large group ings of bulbs are much more effec tive than spread ing them thinly in a wider area. This may sound expensive, but it needn't be if you concentrate the same amount of bulbs into one or two areas where the flowers will be appreciated most. You could, for example, cre ate a magnificent vista visible from inside the house, or a sumptuous patio planting close to the den. It's often the front door of the house, rather than the back one, which gets most use in winter and spring. So, edge pathways with hyacinths, o r a scented jonquil or tazetta daffodil, for a wonderfully fragrant welcome, or pack a bed opposite the front door with large clusters of daf fodils and multi coloured tulips for a gloriously colourful greeting whenever you, or your guests, enter or leave the house.
