D6 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER 4 Wednesday, September 29, 1999 OMHA champs look to defend their title Deaths Last season, the 12 and 13-year-old boys who skated for this team as minor peewee AA players, enjoyed a tremendous season -- one that was capped by winning the OMHA championship in Uxbridge. Despite a few roster changes in the spring, the peewee AA Oakville Rangers rep hockey team is looking forward to another successful year under the direction of last year's returning coaching staff comprised of head coach Scott Bachly and assistant coaches Jad Stammers, Kevin McMillan and Chris Halyk (who is also the team's trainer). Burlington's Tiger Cats welcomed the visiting Oakville Rangers this past Sunday, Sept. 26th. Despite a scoreless first period, the Rangers picked up the pace and handed the opposition a solid 5-0 defeat. Earning his first shutout this season was goal- tender Dan Szarka who was simply amazing between the pipes. Assistant Captain Jeff Nabeta demonstrated his puck-handling and scoring skills as he logged his first hat-trick of the season. Single markers were chipped in by Mark Harris and Captain Kevin Sinclair. Setting up the goals were Lucas Pamazone (3); Assistant Captain Kyle Dorosh (2); Ryan Mant; Andrew Bachly and Michael Gomes. Oliveira and Watts score in opening draw pinched in from the point and blast ed a shot at the net. The Halton goalie made the initial save, but Jordy Watts was in position to knock in the rebound and put Oakville up 2-1. Fine rushes up ice by Mike Young and Stuart Favretto kept the pressure on the Halton team, while Murray Cruickshank and Alex Crepinsek stifled the Hurricanes offence with their solid defensive play. The Rangers kept the pressure on the Halton team, but were unable to extend their lead due to a hot Halton goaltender. Despite carrying the balance of play in the second half of the game, the Hurricanes scored a goal in the third period to tie up the match at 2-2. In an exhibition game against The minor atom AAA Oakville Rangers battled to a 2-2 tie in their season opener against the Halton Hurricanes. Both teams got into early penal ty trouble in a chippy start to the game. Fine defensive plays kept Oakville in the game. Defenceman Jamie Kulla broke up a 2 on 1 play, and goalie Graham Moffat made a spectacular kick save to keep Halton off the score sheet until late in the first period when Halton went up 1-0. In the second frame, John Kurtz outhustled a Hurricane defender behind the Halton net and got the puck to Brendan Taylor. Taylor found Kevin Oliveira in the slot who rifled a shot low to the comer to tie the game at 1-1. Minutes later, Cody Goloubef Regular season starts on winning note The Canron Oakville Rangers minor novice tripIe-A rep team lost a heartbreaker to the Buffalo Regals in the consolation finals of the Paramount Wonderland tournament in August. The boys got off to a rough start losing 5-3 to Buffalo Regals in the opening game of the tourney, followed by another loss 7-2 to Wrap n Roll. To their credit, the boys stuck together as a team and tied Detroit Little Caesars 4-4 then went on to beat the Seneca Blues 4-1 and the Wheatfield Blades 4-2. In the champi onship game, the boys faced off against the Buffalo Regals for a second time. Oakville held a 1-0 lead with four minutes left in the third when Buffalo tied the score. The game then went into a 4 on 4 overtime period which was dominated by the Rangers. Still tied at the end of the overtime period, it then went into a shoot-out which was won by Buffalo. The parents were extreme ly happy with the effort put in by all the boys. The Rangers opened their regular season on Saturday, Sept. 18th, with a 7-2 win over Niagara Falls. The team received great goaltending from Joey Lepera, a strong defence, and a great effort from all three forward lines. Goals scored by Michael DeRenzis (2), Joel Selinger, Bryce MacRae, Matthew McKeown, Scott Henry and Bradley Morris. Assists to Henry (3), Daniel Purcell (2), Reid Stevens, Michael Mirabelli, Tyler Karius, Eric Chiasson, Morris, Selinger, DeRenzis, MacRae. In their second game of the season, the CANRON Rangers continued their momentum with a 6-2 win over Halton Hurricanes. Once again, the team received solid goaltending, this time from Jimmy Whelpdale. A strong two-way effort was given by all three forward and defensive lines. Goals scored by DeRenzis (2), MacRae, Henry, Selinger and Karius. Assists to Purcell (2), Selinger (2), Prapavessis, Henry, DeRenzis, Stevens and Mirabelli. the Mississauga Senators, an enter taining contest saw the Rangers come up just short. Brendan Taylor led the Oakville attack with two goals and two assists, including a spectacular rush around two defenders, finishing up with a top shelf wrist shot. Both John Kurtz and Kevin Oliveira had a goal and an assist in the match which saw the Rangers get out to a 2-0 lead. Mississauga exploded in the second period for six goals, interrupted only by Sam Gagne's unassisted wrist shot blast to the goalie's stick side. Kyle Badham scored an unas sisted third period goal and Brendan Taylor added his two markers, but it was not enough as the Rangers fell 7-6.
