Wednesday, September 29, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER D8 DOES YOUR CAR WAX GIVE YOU BETTER PROTECTION THAN YOUR CUT-RATE CAR INSURANCE? Don't trust just anyone to insure your car, see me: John Baum ann 627 Lyons Lane #308, Oakville I 842-2225 Hyundai Tibumn provides "more go for the dough" 1999 Hyundai T iburon By Jim Robinson SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER It doesn't happen every day, but from time to time carmakers make changes to a model even though none are nec essary. Despite the classic "if it ain't broke.." saying, carmakers seem compelled to change grilles, taillights, colors, etc., in hopes of keeping an aging sled new and fresh. The down-side for the dealer is they have to move out this year's selection to make room for the new ones. The up-side is consumers can, based on their ability to deal, come away with a great car at a great price. A case in point in the 1999 Hyundai Tiburon. As this is being written, the 2000 models are on their way to Canadian showrooms. About the only differences are four tiny round headlamps like Integra with a scalloped hood "borrowed" from the latest Jaguar XK sedans. Tested here is the 1999 Tiburon FX with five speed manual transmission with a MSRP of $19,895. Now you can buy the base Tiburon manual at $ 17,895 or the base car with automatic at $18,845. Even the FX with four-speed automatic is $20,845. So the price is already pretty attractive for a very shapely two-door hatch with lots of looks and a pretty seri ous engine under the hood. The Hyundai people have always talked about "more go for the dough" since the Tiburon was put on the Canadian market in 1997. The car itself was based on a daring HCD-II concept exercise by Hyundai's California design studio. While it made a great showcar, few auto pundits thought the ultra conser vative Koreans would ever build the car. Well, build it they did. At the heart of the car is a Hyundai- developed twin-cam Beta four-cylinder engine displacing 2.0-liters and producing 140 hp and 133 ft/lb of torque. To maxi mize torque and fuel efficiency, Hyundai engineers went with a pent roof combus tion chamber, multi-port fuel injection and dual aperture spray injectors. Along with distributorless ignition and advanced engine management computer, the Beta engine is second to none in terms of design efficiently. The standard transmission for this front-drive car is a five-speed manual or an optional four-speed electronic auto matic with lock-up torque converter and driver-selectable overdrive mode. To get the most out of the exceptional ly rigid body/chassis, a fully independent four-wheel suspension system was need ed. At the front are coil spring over MacPherson struts while the rear is a multi-link system. Both ends get anti sway bars. As befits a sports coupe, the steering is rack and pinion with power assist. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------A d v e r to r ia l ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For safety's sake, replace broken windshield Auto glass replacement is high on the repair list in accidents and auto theft. Even sudden stops can cause unbelted passengers and objects to fly forward and damage windshields. Due to the untold number of circum stances that can cause windshield dam age, it needs to be common knowledge that improper windshield replacement is hazardous to your health. According to the "I-CAR Reference Manual for Senior Executives", unibod vehicles are engineered to protect pas sengers during crashes. Therefore, pas senger safety is the key element in auto mobile design. This is why vehicle manufacturers intentionally build autos in the following manner. First, front and rear structural parts are designed to absorb collision energy by collapsing at pre-determined points called 'crush zones'. Second, the crush zones are built into the front and rear of the vehicle as a series of holes, dimples or convolutions. Third, hoods are designed to buckle in order to avoid penetrating the wind shield. Fourth, the vehicle structure is designed to route impact forces and damage around the passenger compart ment. This is why vehicles appear to fold up like a soda can in a crash. There are three issues to remember Safety, safety, safety. Your windshield acts as a security and transmission device to move the force of an impact from the front of the vehicle, up through the windshield to the roof and to the back of the vehicle. Therefore, if the windshield is NOT installed correctly, the safety of the pas sengers is compromised. Urethanes only should be used to secure windshields to the structure frame of vehicles. In most cases, the adhesive manufacturers require the vehi cle to not be moved or driven until the adhesive has cured, which in some cases are more as long as a day or more. Convenience can be dangerous If your insurance company or it Agent insists that you go to their drive- in glass repair facility to have you wind shield replaced, driving away the same day, you need to understand what you are doing. Unfortunately for consumers, the replacements of windshields are one of the most technical and least understood functions in the auto repair industry. Adhesives must be used perfectly and have sufficient time to cure. Failure to cure before the vehicle is driven can cause shifting and the adhesive to mal function. If the windshield has been installed poorly, serious injuries can occur. The question is, do you want a cheap, fast job and risk being injured? If your answer is no, then make it your business to take any repair company to task before you allow them to work on your vehicle. If you're in need of a windshield repair, contact Apple Auto Glass. While the base Tiburon has disc brakes at front, drums at the rear, the FX as tested here has four-wheel disc brakes. ABS is only available on the FX with a "Deluxe Sport Package." In our part of the country, ABS is something Hyundai should think about offering across the board. While the base car is nice, I'm talking here about the FX and fitting it out with an eye to price. Now you could go for the base car and add the $800 Sport Package that include rear spoiler, fog lights and 15- inch alloy wheels for just $800. Or you can get this in the showroom stock FX that also includes a deluxe cloth interior that really does look a step up from the base car. If you want leather add another $1,000 or leather with ABS in the afore mentioned Touring Package will set you back $1,875. As for me, the Touring Package adds 10 per cent of the value of the standard FX, so I'd take the car the way it comes out of the box. And speaking about coming out of the box, the Tiburon does so very swiftly indeed. The five-speed shifter relies on cables and it has a clunky feel, but then all cable shifters do. The engine is very gutsy off the line but it really comes into its own at highway cruising speeds. This car likes to be pointed when you crank the steering wheel over. Yep, the 2000 model yearTiburons are on the way, so there was never a better time than now to look, and haggle, over a 1999. • We are an Authorized zz Novus n c w i^ r e p a i r s h o p - specializing in repairing all chips and cracks up to 10' long.
