Of employers polled, 15% intend to add workers this fall, while 5% plan to cut back. Another 78% of employers antici­ pate no changes and 2% haven't final­ ized plans for the final quarter of the year. "Employers were more reserved a year ago at this time," said Manpower spokesperson Kory Bielic. "At that time, 13% voiced hiring intentions and 8% said they would reduce their work­ forces. The outlook held more promise three months ago when 25% reported they would need more employees and only 3% thought they had too many." This fall, job prospects appear best in durable and non-durable goods man­ ufacturing, transportation/public utili­ ties, wholesale/retail trade, education and services. It started by accident quite a number of years ago when a woman, in business for nine years, came in, in tears. She was up against the .Vail. Her credit was gone. Her suppliers were stretcnpd to the limit. Sales were down. The bank wouldn't talk to her. In fact, she had not made a profit in the nine years she had been in business. She spent two hours a week with us for three weeks. In total, we spent six hours with her. She went away with a different per­ spective. The game is about perspective. In nine months, she was in the black and making a profit for the first tihie in her life. I saw her the other day. She was smiling. She was having fun. She hasn't looked back since those three sessions. I tell you this not so you can say "good for you Dave." That isn't what this is about. I tell you this to point out how quickly you can change the direction of a business. It is amazing how responsive a business can be to T h e B u s i n e s s ^ D o c t o F ^ change. In a one-person business, the change can be almost instantaneous. In larger businesses, it takes a lit­ tle longer simply because you are dealing with a larger number of employees but even then, it can be done fair­ ly quickly. There are, of course, some rules to the game. First, you must want to succeed. Yes, I know that sounds stu­ pid but there are lots of people who don't want to be successful. Secondly, you must be prepared to accept the fact that you and you alone are responsible for the trouble your business is in. We are quick to accept acco­ lades for our successes. If we were equally as quick to accept responsibility for the difficulties, the business would run a lot more efficiently. Thirdly, you must real­ ize that you are the only one who can fix your business. Now, if you can get past these three basics, try this... The business world we operate in is not the real world. What we do is construct a unique model in our heads of what we believe business is all about. We build this model at a subconscious level. We do it without even being aware of it. We create a framework of things we believe -- a framework of "truths" about how a business works that serves to support our own unique model. Once the model is built, we live in the model, as though it were the real world. Most business problems come from the model, not from the real world. There is more business and greater success available in the real world than you will ever be able to achieve using your model. Change your model; change the things you believe about how your business runs and you immediately change your results. All significant change begins inside with a changed belief.
