On Saturday, Feb. 3, the Oakville Centre for the Per­ forming Arts will publicly debut its new instrument - a Steinway grand piano, model D - during the Oak­ ville Symphony's Vienna - City of Music, with guest artist Mehdi Ghazi. A second performance will be held Sunday, Feb. 4 and both will take place at the Oakville Centre. The Steinway replaces the centre's previous cla­ vier, a Yamaha grand pia­ no, which was in use since 1984. Robin Howarth, Oak­ ville Centre manager, said a Steinway is recognized among professional musi­ cians for being more than just a standard piano. "The piano was showing signs of needing major work, in terms of cracks to the soundboard, adjust­ ments of the tuning pins, disengagement issues with hammerheads, plate height, broken key frame, the pin bushings, etc.," said Howarth. He noted the Steinway model D piano is eight-foot, 11.75 inches in length and has seven "unique charac­ teristics," including contin­ uous bent rim construc­ tion, scale, hammers, ex­ clusive hexagrip pin block, diaphragmatic sound­ boards and its accelerated action. Depending on their maintenance frequency, storage (humidity-con- trolled environment), how and where they're used, Steinway pianos typically have a lifespan of 40 to 60 years, Horwath added. "The Town of Oakville put a lot of research into what piano would suit our needs, in terms of the pro­ fessional acts we present and the requests of our community and rental plans," said Howarth. "It made sense that we needed it, (Oakville Sym­ phony) needed it, so I put to­ gether an informal commit­ tee to ensure these facts were correct and went through the relevant pur­ chasing procedure." The Oakville Centre worked with Steinway Pia­ no Gallery Canada to assess the organization's needs and co-ordinated a tour of the New York Steinway manufacturing facility to learn the history and con­ struction process, Horwath said. "We narrowed it down to one (model), which would be best suited to the size of our auditorium at the Oak­ ville Centre," said Howarth. While an exact figure wasn't disclosed, the Oak­ ville Centre manager said it was bought at market val­ ue, which was a "substan­ tial cost." "It's a significant pur­ chase. It's significant to the Oakville Centre, the town, artists and audience that play and see it performed," said Howarth. Vienna - City of Music will be held Saturday, Feb. 3 and Sunday, Feb. 4 at the Oakville Centre, 130 Navy St. Showtimes are 8 p.m. on Feb. 3 and 2 p.m. on Feb. 4.
