CRIME Gymnastics coach accused of sexually assaulting girl 2 masked men rob Oakville convenience storePolice believe there may be other victims LOUIE ROSELLA lrosella@mississauga.net Mississauga's gymnas tics community is reeling af ter a well-known coach was arrested and faces charges that include sexual assault and child luring in relation to one of his students. Earlier this year, Peel po lice investigators were con tacted by a 15-year-old Mis sissauga girl to report "mul tiple sex-related criminal in cidents" that occurred over a four-year period between her and her gymnastics coach. A Canada-wide arrest warrant was issued for 28- year-old Scott McFarlane on Friday, Jan. 26 and he turned himself in to police Jan. 29. He is charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, child luring, making sexual explicit material available to a person under 16 and inde cent exposure to a person un der 16. McFarlane has been an active gymnastic coach in the Region of Peel, including at places such as Manjaks Gymnastics in Mississauga and Tumblers Gymnastics Centre, and also coached in Oakville, Ottawa, and in Western Canada. McFarlane, who re presented Ontario in numer ous national championships, has been suspended indefi nitely by Gymnastics Onta rio and Gymnastics Canada. "Gym nastics Can ada has a ze- ro-toler- ance policy for any type of beha viour that puts the safety and well-being of our participants at risk," said Richard Crepin, chair of the board of directors at Gymnastics Canada. "More than words though, it's ac tions that count. Our top pri ority is building a safe envi ronment for our participants by enhancing the policies and mechanisms we have in place so that our athletes and coaches are safe and secure and so parents feel confident that their children are safe. Our hearts go out to the vic tim in this case, and we want her, and the rest of our com munity, to know that we will not rest until this type of be haviour no longer finds a home in the sport of gymnas tics." The arrest sent shock waves through the city's gymnastics community. "Everyone is in shock," said Mary Giordano, who says her daughter was trained by McFarlane. "He was such an inspirational coach." Investigators from the special victims unit believe that there may be more vic tims and/or witnesses and are asking anyone who had contact with McFarlane to call police at 905-453-2121, ext. 3460 or Peel Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222- 8477.
