The successful event also offered many door prizes, including two Dominique De Sentino outfits (one of which is shown on the right--from the "Passport" Group, an assymet- ric cut long sleeve top with matching black pant. Those individ­uals with leadership qualities. That spe­cial person who encourages others to participate in the greater whole, who embraces others with a profound respect for their gifts. This person celebrates sharing by giving back to others. They have an initiative, courage and passionate commitment that is consistent with values, common purpose and the need for sys­ tematic and sweeping change. The ATHENA Award celebrates these indi­ viduals. Recipients must meet three specific criteria: 1. Assist women in reaching their full leader­ ship potential; 2. Demonstrate excellence, creativity and initiative in their business or profession; and 3. Provide valuable service by devoting time and energy to improve the quality of life for others in the community. This is the third year Oakville is holding the ATHENA Award Program. The inspiration for the ATHENA Program origi­ nated in Lansing, Michigan, USA, in 1980, when business owner Martha Mayhood Mertz discovered that in the 75 years of presenting community awards, her Chamber of Commerce had only once honoured a woman. As the only working woman Board mem­ ber, Mertz recognized that the Chamber board- room did not reflect the reality of the changing world. It was time to bring into focus the many outstanding professional and business women in our communities and to incorporate them into leadership positions within the Chamber. The first ATHENA Award was presented in 1982, and since then, over 2,000 recipients in more than 350 cities have been presented the Award. In Canada, Oakville is the second city to become a participant in the ATHENA Program, following Windsor, Ontario. "It is my hope that the ATHENA Award Program will stretch out far beyond Oakville," said Diana Saulez, Athena Award Committee chair. Mayor Ann Mulvale, the winner of the first Oakville ATHENA Award has made initial contact with municipal council heads and the idea, according to Saulez, has been very well received. Mulvale, along with the 1998 recipient Laura Kupferschmidt and Saulez attended the national conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania this year. Mulvale was one of four women profiled in the Inaugural Report. "It really puts Oakville on the map!" said Saulez. "She received much acclaim, and acted as an amazing ambassador for Oakville." Don Crossley, executive vice president of the Oakville Chamber of Commerce, originally heard of the ATHENA Award Program and intro­ duced the idea to the Chamber. Oakville embraced the idea and the third year brings founder Martha Mertz as guest speaker to the Chamber's annual general meeting on September 23, 1999. Besides honouring outstanding community leaders, Saulez hopes the future will see the Program in the school system. "In this way, a young person personifying the leadership model can be recognized and thus aspire to be a role model to others," said Saulez. "All dreams at the moment, but I am passionate about the concept and have been blessed with a committee that has embraced the whole idea and is working to ensure its success." This year, the Oakville ATHENA Award will be presented at the annual general meeting of the Oakville Chamber of Commerce, on September 23.
