B o r n in E l b i n g , E a s t P r u s s i a ( n o w E lb la g , P o la n d ) in 1940, she a n d her m o t h e r s u r v iv e d a h a r r o w i n g f l i g h t w e stw a rd in J a n u a r y 1945 as part o f a massive exod u s ah e ad of a d va n c in g Russian armies in brutal w in te r weather. H a v in g m iraculously m ade it to the w est by 1946, th e little girl and her m oth er survived th e hardships o f post­ w a r G e rm a n y until con d it io n s b e g a n to im prove and her mother, a learned w o m a n , o b ta in ed w o r k at the G e rm a n Fore ign O ffice in th e n ew capital of Bonn w h e re th ey f inally settled. In 1960, Barbara m et her future husband of 56 years in Eng land . She was at M an chester University on a one-year ex ch a n ge w ith th e University o f Bonn. He w a s a C a n a d i a n E n g i n e e r s t u d y i n g a t M a n c h e s t e r on an o v e r s e a s s c h o la r s h ip . T h e y sa t by c h a n c e at t h e s a m e t a b l e at an In t e r n a t io n a l S t u d e n ts Dinner. A t fi rst, she d i d n 't k n o w w h a t t o m a k e of th is s t r a n g e colonial boy. But he was persistent and the rest is history. They were married on th e banks o f th e R h in e in Bonn in 1962 and arr ived in C a n a d a a ye a r later. H e r h u s b a n d 's w o r k on O n t a r i o H y d r o 's n u c le a r p o w e r p r o g r a m involved consid erable transfers from one location to a n o th e r but a one-year p o s t in g in T o r o n t o p e rm itte d c o m p le t io n o f her Masters D e g r e e in Slavic L a n g u a g e s at U. o f T. They finally settled in Oakvil le and never left except to the fa m ily cottage on G eorgia n Bay at Cape Chin every summer. Barbara w a s an a c co m p lish e d p a in te r and sculptor, linguist, g o u r m e t cook, and m o th er and g r a n d m o t h e r extra ord in a ire . She w a s an exp ert v o lu n te e r Braillist w ith th e CNIB fo r m any years. She was a Reiki Master and was well read a n d k n o w l e d g e a b l e on m a tte rs o f h e a lt h a n d n u t r i t io n w h i c h she s h a r e d w i d e l y w i t h t h o s e in n e ed . Sh e w a s a g e n e r o u s d o n o r t o m a n y ch ar itab le causes in s u p p o rt o f ch i ld ren and th e en viron m e n t. She radiated love and caring to all w h o came in contact with her. Hers was a life truly well lived.
