b. 16, 1994 etting lost on dark golf course no picnic A mid-winter chance to get a jump 11 the golf season turned tense for 0 local duffers recently after they ound themselves lost on the links in tal darkness. The incident took place on the lanters Row course on Hilton Head land in South Carolina on Feb. lst hen Oakviiie’s Len Sanci and Don utorac - together with friends Ford ’Brien and Michael Mangan - tried 0 squeeze in one too many holes. opelessly disoriented by unfamiliar urroundings and confused by utter kness, the quartet tried to make it ack to the clubhouse, all the while caring an accident and even alliga- ors. “It was black and cold and miser- ble and as we went along you see bsolutely nothing,” said Sanci. “No oon, no anything.” The chain of events actually started when the plane which Butorac and THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Localfoursome became disoriented (IS darknessfell on South Carolina course Mangan flew in on was delayed and lunch wasn’t started until 3 pm. Anxious to hit some balls despite the waning day, the quartet decided to play anyway - even though they didn’t know exactly when it got dark. “It was cold, in the high thirties, but out we went,” said Sanci. “It had been months since we’d played, but we played well. It got darker - you could barely see your drive or approach shot - but we kept playing. No point quitting after seven holes.” Finally, after taking their last putts at the isolated 9th hole, they decided to head back. One problem. Where’s the clubhouse? Where’s the lights? It quickly dawned on the men that they were in a bit of a bind but headed back anyway, Sanci and Butorac in Teens charged in high-tech Bell heist Two Oakville young offenders and an 18-year-old Scarborough resident have charged with stealing $20,000 worth of sophisticated electronic equipment from company vehicles at the Bell Canada compound on Cornwall Road, last SUII'lIl‘lCl'. Obviously we didn’t go the right way.” Sanci said they drove with extreme caution - signs only six feet away were completely obscured - and did their best to stay on the path. Finally Sanci recognized a Buick dealer he’d seen on the way from the airport and followed a fence along Highway 278 to the entrance of the course. As they pulled up- to the clubhouse around 6:30 pm. a “rescue” vehicle (actually a refreshment cart with lights) was just heading out after them. Problem was, Mangan and O’Brien were still missing. The searchers came back a while later, but still no sign of their friends, prompting Sanci and Butorac to think the worst: they’d hit a tree, tipped over or - gulp - encountered a alligator. Finally, at around 8 pm, the search party located the pair. “It was humorous when it started and humorous when it ended, but in nuddS‘ SATU?N..
