Believe it! \ Donald Marshall need go no farther ‘ than his crawl space, greenhouses and back yard composter to win Olympic Gold. Marshall, president of the Oakville Horticultural Association and a Master Gardener, won his award from Participaction, the people who run those ads encouraging everyday people to lead active lives without having to, as Marshall puts it, "swim across Lake Ontario twice a day to be fit." He doesn‘t know who submitted his name to the folks at Participaction, but last spring, a film crew arrived at his west Oakville home to film him out and about in his garden and compost heap. He became part of a commercial promoting healthy, clean living. "*You get concentrating on something you enjoy, and all of your troubles disappear. Gardening is good physically, and its good mentally," says Marshall in the commercnal televised across Canada. "Just by doing an everyday activity, you can stay fit," says Marshall, a man in his 50s, retiree. "I had a free blood test over at the mall not long ago, and I had a reading of 128 over 80, which is very good." ' Marshall devotes 11 mon gardening, flowers of all k als, and vegetables. All that does is speed up the comâ€" posting process. "Because of composting, I‘ve been able to reduce my garbage â€" cut it in half. But," he emphasizes, "you have to start at the front end of the chain, and not buy over packaged goods. By avoiding access packaging, you avoid making so much garbage." "I have no idea how they (Participation) got my name," says the softâ€"spoken gardener. "And, I‘m surprised to win."
