THE OAKVILLE BEAVER ~SPORTS AND RECREATION Oh, so close It was one of the finest gameâ€"ending shots you‘ll ever see as Josh Stevenson, with his St. Thomas Aquinas junior basketball team trailing Burlington‘s Lester B. Pearson 66â€"65 in Thursday‘s Halton high school championships, heaved the ball from about the centre line. As it sailed inexorably through the air toward its target, the ball held both the fate of the game and the eyes of everyone in the Sheridan College gym. The ball hit the backboard. And then ... swoosh. Two points. An ending almost too perfect for Hollywood. Or so thought the St. Thomas Aquinas players and fans who went wild. But they celebrated for what was probably a shorter time than it had taken for the ball to reach the basket. For the ref had ruled that one of the finest gameâ€"ending shots you‘ll ever see had left the player‘s hands an instant after time expired. The ref vanished as fast as he made the call, not wishing to argue the matter with the stunned St. Thomas Aquinas players and fans. And what could he have told them, anyway. He had called a decent game and made his best call. The coaches quickly reigned in the players who were brimming over with emotion. They collected their secondâ€"place medals and went to the dressing room. It was a tough defeat, and coach John Beraldo said he told the boys in the dressing room that they should accept the result with class and "take it like them one heck of an entertaining game. Tronically, St. Thomas Aquinas were responsible for the scarcity of seconds left in the scoreboard for on their previous offensive thrust, prior to the missed Burlington foul shot, they had taken their time coming down the court, stealing the precious seconds, for what they hoped would be one last â€" successful â€" shot. But it was not to be for St. Thomas Aquinas who led by as much as 10 points going into the fourth quarter. A nice, fast tempo "in our favor" allowed St. Thomas Aquinas to enjoy success through the first part of the game, said Beraldo. But the team started taking some "touch fouls and the game slowed down. Once it slowed down, it was in their favor." Josh Stevenson of the St. Thomas Aquinas junior basketball team made the shot of his life â€" a gameâ€"ending desperation toss from midâ€" court â€" only to have the referee rule that time had expired in Thursday‘s Halton high school championships. _ (Photo by Peter McKusker) Happy Meals Are Here... with Cabbage Patch Kids Figurines Tonka Trucks!
