Police checking out semiâ€"automatic sidearms By GORD KOLLE Special to the Beaver With semiâ€"automatic pistols, Halton Police will get the draw on gunâ€"toting crooks. * Police forces across the ‘province, including Halton, are moving to semiâ€"automatic pistols. ‘These are slated to replace the stanâ€" dard .38 revolver over the next 60 months. The province wants the pistols on line quickly. It has given police a maximum five years to complete the changeover. Halton Police Chief, Peter Campbell, said the time will be needed to choose the right pistol and then retrain officers on the new weapons. "We‘ll do it as quickly as we All we know about the law is that we‘ll put you behind bars for a steal. THE OAKVILLE BEAVER can," said Campbell at last Thursday‘s police services board meeting. "The police community in genâ€" eral has been lobbying hard for changes to the handgun laws. It‘s clear the semiâ€"automatic weapon is now the preferred choice," said Campbell. Meanwhile, the .38 will remain standard issue to all police forces in Ontario until the transition is comâ€" pleted. As a result, the ministry has ordered that police who use the revolver are provided with safety information. There is a threeâ€"part procedure to follow: * Police who use revolvers must be notified of certain safety probâ€" lems. These hazards occur in reloading, accidental discharge through single action use, and the revolver‘s nasty habit of becoming unintentionally cocked while in the holster. * Police should be educated about revolver hazards. This involves videotape demonstrations and written handouts. * Safety training programs on the weapons. Police are increasingly faced with criminals armed with semiâ€"automatic rifles, machine guns, and pistols. Police officers themselves are being killed or injured in shootouts where these weapons are used. And evidence reveals the stanâ€" dard revolver just can‘t cut it in a protracted firefight. So, the solicitor general‘s office recently amended police regulations to permit the use of semiâ€"automatic pistols by uniformed officers. Mar. 30, 1994 Many of these guns are equipped with nineâ€"round to 14â€"round magaâ€" zines compared to six bullets carâ€" ried in the .38. Prior to the ruling only, special police units could carry pistols. But the amendment now lets officers on the beat pack a wallop that should save their lives, the lives of citizens, and deter criminals. Opponents of the pistol have protested that semiâ€"automatic guns are too powerful and will kill rather than wound. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. The program includes election of the association executive, an address by Senator Michael A. Meighen, and an open forum for members to discuss .38 should be continued for police who still carry revolvers.
