In the Focus secâ€" tion of today‘s newspaper, there is much talk of violence and the need to curb it before it gets to American levâ€" els. Like that teacher in the video said... it‘s getting ugly. But what there is consensus on is the very real need to take some tentaâ€" tive steps towards grappling with the issue now. DORVAL DRIVE TUESDAY, MAY 24, 1994 Rose Hastings â€" a Canadian crimiâ€" nologist â€" said on CBC Radio the other day that crime should be like the health care field; there should be more emphasis on preventive measures. _ He acknowledged there is as much anger in people in Canada as there is in those south of the border. Everybody‘s pretty much the same when it comes to getting ticked off. And if we follow Hastings‘ logic about prevention, then look at what early detection and prevention has done in the health care field. It has made us cognizant of the dangers of smoking; alerted us to the importance of early detection in breast cancer; and sparked us to eat better to prevent keeling over at the office. I think Hastings has a point. The police have used proactive policing for years and health care has used prevention for years. Educator:s and parents now must work to get that type of preventive thinkâ€" ing... be it more antiâ€"violent programs peer mediation, whatever â€" onto the schoolyards. "We just don‘t have guns," sai Hastings. And parents have to come to grips with turning off the shows. It‘s point less to have a fiveâ€"yearâ€"old watcl mindless violence while he‘s munchâ€" ing Cheerios in the morning only tc head off and be taught conflict resolu tion in the classroom.
