"They had no money for food, yet they wanted to buy dye or a "potion" to turn white like us," said Christie. "It was all so hopeless, someâ€" how,. and yet they were used to it," said Christie. The students were appalled at the lack of basic rights in the country and the punitive meaâ€" sures that follow. One man was put in jail for asking for a lunch hour for workers, they said. As well, they had to deal with the sense of helplessness they felt in face of the realities they were expeâ€" riencing first hand. One of the things they had to get over was the feeling of being an intruder in someone else‘s home. "I felt really uncomfortable at first," admitted Christie. Miller said he is looking forward to the annual Development Day at White Oaks this year where, for the first time, the students who have returned from Mexico will take over and run the day. "And it will be so much more beneficial because it will be coming from them instead of me," he said. Realizing how sobering much of the things they saw, Miller said he lightened it up every so often. One evening, they went to a disco and karaoke night. "That was important, I think. You can‘t absorb all of that without lightening it up a little," he said. One of them told me the most annoying thing she has heard from her friends has been "so, where‘s your tan?" To Miller, the opportunity to see a Third World country firstâ€"hand was a tremendous experience for the students. He said many, includâ€" ing himself, who had wide experiâ€" ence traveling and working in Third World countries were a "little low" after the trip. wanted to get away.
