Sheridan‘s Heavy Equipment School set for spring closure heridan College‘s Heavy Equipment School will close this spring, the victim of reduced federal funding for trades training. Gus King, viceâ€"pres. of Community and Government Services for the college, said fundâ€" ing has been declining for years and now Oakvilleâ€"based Dufferin Aggregates, the owner of the Milton training property wants to quarry the site. They won‘t renew the lease which ends in April. According to King, that means upwards of $3â€" million would have to be invested to relocate the school and there‘s no money for that move. The school offered a number of programs including sixâ€"week operâ€" ator courses and a more rigorous two year program along with heavy equipment mechanics programs. The college does intend to keep its truck driving program. King said there is a very strong demand for these kinds of drivers. King said that anywhere from 200â€"300 people take courses of varying duration throughout the year. But he said the college was aware of the reduced funding probâ€" lems and so didn‘t accept any more twoâ€"year students this year. "It‘s difficult to be effective (in training) when they‘re not planning well...we need better planning horiâ€" zons and a long term commitment to training," said King. "Given the major capital costs in relocation, the need for equipment and fleet upgrades, and uncertain funding, the only practical solution is a planned phaseâ€"out of programs between now and the end of April, 1995. The Sheridan College Board of Governors approved the closure at its Sept. 28th meeting. "It was one of the toughest deciâ€" 220 North Service Rd.W.
