Shelley Harrison, of Georgetown, went to school with the 29 yearâ€"old combat pilot, when the two were stuâ€" dents in the early 1980‘s at Maple Grove Public School in east Oakville. "She was always riding miniâ€" bikes," said Harrison. "She never wore a dress and was a real tomboy." Kara made history earlier this year after being the first female to qualify as an American services fighter pilot. Lieut. Hultgreen was the youngest of three girls who attended school in town. Sisters Kirsten and Dagney now both live in California. Kara also attended Oakville Trafalgar High School up to grade 10. The younger girls stayed with their father in Oakville for a time after their parents separated. All three girls then went south to San Antonio Texas with their mother Sally Spears who studied law. One of only two U.S. navy comâ€" bat pilots, Lt. Hultgreenâ€"was on a landing approach to the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln when something went wrong. Her coâ€"pilot ejected and was rescued but it still isn‘t known if Hultgreen ejected or went down with her plane. Her body still hasn‘t been found. After moving from Oakville, she graduated from college, attended offiâ€" cer and flight school and later flew navy bombers and training planes. After a letterâ€"writing campaign to the U.$. Congress, they changed the poliâ€" cy about women being permitted to fly combat planes. The navy has not released any furâ€" ther details about the crash and an investigation is now under way.
