Wednesday June 23, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER A7 COMMENT * Local women ready for Dragon Boat competition This weekend, a group of local gals more com fortable on a soccer field are heading onto the water - scrambling into thin dragon boats they've trained on for the past nine weeks and going all out - for just three and a half minutes. T hey're part o f the Toronto International Dragon Boat Race event at the Toronto Islands this weekend. And for these women - most o f whom are in their 40s - it's all been brand new. "I used to think it was just rowing teams that did this," said captain and organizer o f the O akville team , Fanny Marr, a teacher with the Peel Board of Education. "But I learned you could get a community team together and that got me interested. I liked the idea it w asn't ju st for teams, but for ordinary people." Not that any o f them knew any thing about what is fast becoming a huge event ju s t o ff the Toronto Islands this weekend. "It's been a hoot. I thought every one would hate me," said Marr, "but the girls are all saying it's great. It's hard work but it's like learning a dance. You know you're not in sync at first but than after lots o f practice, now we are." One of the big reasons is the coach the women, all involved with the Oakville Soccer Club, were DIANE HART \ *** given when they signed up. "H e's had just the right amount of humour and a good perspective," said Marr. Added Heather McIntosh, another team member: "We've all enjoyed this so much. It's been just wonder ful." • On June 26th the Oakville women race in timed heats and then the final on June 27th. Re: Coyote hybrids prey on urban pets (Oakville Beaver Sun. June 20, 1999). I know Betty Shilson's pain; so does my next door neighbour. Another neighbour's dog survived a brutal coyote attack. Each time I hear about another pet attacked by coyotes, or lost and never found, I relive my experience. However, I do not agree that the 'coyote problem ' is the responsibili- Speaking just a few days before the event, McIntosh said she was nervous but also excited. "We've had such a great time training for this - it was new to all of us and now we all think in number of strokes." She said the weekly practices were always worthwhile: "You get off the water just as the sun is set ting, and there's such a high. You feel really good." McIntosh liked the cross-training aspect to the nine-week training. With advice from instructors at Ferrone Fitness where she works out when she isn't on the soccer field, M cIntosh passed on exercises to strengthen backs and abs. She said the hardest thing was to forget all she'd learned about paddling ty of our Oakville Humane Society or any provincial ministry. I have lived in Oakville for 40 of my 43 years and cannot ever remember this happening in years past. The building boom in Oakville has taken away the homes of the coyotes and foxes, as well as their usual prey of smaller animals, forc ing them into our neighbourhoods. I because the technique in a dragon boat is far different. But she loved it all the same. "It's a great workout; we really felt it." Marr concurred: "It's hard work but it's like anything else: with improvement you feel great." Between 800 and 1,000 people are expected at the event's upcoming rally on Thursday night. Last prac tice for the Oakville team is the usual W ednesday evening from between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. "It's just been incredible, it really has. We've all played soccer for years, but we've said to each this has been just great. We're going to do it again next year for sure." The team has been promised three races for certain. The women know understand that Ms. Shilson is dev astated over the tragic loss of her pet, however, I cannot agree with her proposed solution of trapping the coyotes; it is inhumane. I have three pets at home and I worry constantly that they are not safe in our yard, but the coyotes did not create this prob- lem-we did. I wish we could find a solution-albeit one that does not involve killing any innocent animals. J ill W agener they may not make it to the finals with so many m ore experienced teams lining up at the start line, but it doesn't matter to them at all. Added M cIntosh: "We just want ed to try it and it's been such a thrill. I mean, you get out o f the boat at the end of the practice and you're soak ing wet, but you have such a sense of a team and it's all worthwhile." She was encouraged by the level o f commitment by everyone on the team. It's not easy, she said, espe cially after you've been working hard for almost an hour during the practice and the coach wants to work harder. Not easy, but clearly very satisfy ing. "I thought about it last week: here we are an older bunch of gals for the most part and we're pushing our selves right to the brink and it feels great." M cIntosh said the whole team took greqt pride in the com m ent of the coach, counting their strokes at their recent practice and noting the improvement from when they began it all back in May. She said, proudly: "Not too shab by, that's what he said. Not too shab by." The Toronto International Dragon Boat Race event is slated to get underway June 26th.
