Hotline to the local a rt scene By Tom M ichibata SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER The Mississauga arts community is joining forces with its counterparts around Peel and Halton in a bid to get the word out about arts, entertainment and cultural happenings. Arts organizations across the western GTA now have a toll-free phone number, a web site, a brochure, and displays that will serve people wanting to know what's going on in arts and culture in Oakville, Mississauga, Brampton, Halton Hills, Milton and Caledon. Rather than calling the individual arts coun cils and groups, it's now a case of one-stop shopping. All you have to do is access a new service called ArtsWest. The interactive voice hotline numbers are 615-4376 for local calls and 1-877-278-7976 for toll-free long distance calls. To visit the new web site, log on to www.toronto.com/artswest. Information pertaining to area theaters, art galleries, museums, festivals as well as events in colleges and provincial parks can also be accessed. ArtsWest was launched Wednesday (May 26th) in the Rogers Theatre at the Living Arts Centre. At a cost of about $100,000, the project is the culmination of five years of work and a co operative effort involving the economic devel opment committees and arts councils in Oakville, Mississauga, and Brampton accord ing to Mississauga Arts Council (MAC) arts media consultant Jo Stevenson. A number of sponsors have jumped on board. For example, Bell Canada has imple mented a toll-free multiple-user system and contributed $20,000 and Interkom Creative Marketing designed the $15,000 colour brochure. The Ministry of Citizenship, Culture & Recreation contributed $50,000 over five years. Meanwhile, toronto.com came up with the web links and the ArtsWest web site for about $5,000. MAC executive director Laurie Pallett is excited about how the system will facilitate the dispersal of arts and entertainment information. "Over the years, we've struggled to get the word out to the residents of Halton and Peel concerning the many arts and cultural events happening in communities in the western GTA," said Pallett. "We are first in the country to create such a comprehensive service to answer the demand for up-to-date information that can be easily accessed."
