NEWS Learn the 3 Rs w hen it com es to scams Ontario Provincial Po lice wants the public to learn and practice the three Rs when it comes to scams. That would be Recog nize, Reject and Report fraud. As part of the Fraud Prevention Month aware ness campaign, held each March, the OPP says that the ubiquitous Canada Revenue Agency scam con tinue to inflict significant financial losses on unsus pecting victims. In 2017, the CRA con claimed 1,544 victims in Ontario who lost approxi mately $3 million; there were almost 8,600 such complaints. Police believe only five percent of these crimes are reported. In the typical CRA scam, criminals extort money from their victims by claiming to be from the CRA requesting personal information such as a so cial insurance number, credit card number, bank account number or pass port number. A new twist is that fraudsters will leave a pre recorded message voice mail impersonating the re al CRA. Fraudsters are ei ther phishing for your identification or asking that outstanding taxes be paid. Cases of fraudulent communication could also involve threatening or co ercive language to scare in dividuals into paying a fic titious debt to the CRA. Other forms of commu nication, such as texting, urge taxpayers to visit a fake CRA website where they are asked to verify their identity by entering personal information. Police say the following are warning signs: . Urgency - The scam mer always makes the re- quest sound urgent, which may cause the victim to not verify the story. . Money transfer - Mon ey is usually requested to be sent by a funds transfer company such as Money Gram, Western Union or through your bank. The CRA will never re quest by email, text or phone any personal infor mation such as passport, credit card or bank ac count information. To avoid becoming a vic tim police advise you to hang up and check and ver ify the information with the CRA by calling a trust ed phone number you have found, not a number pro vided by the caller. If you have been a vic tim of a CRA or similar scam, report it to police, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and Crime Stop pers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
