James School recently to hon­ our Girl Guides in the east Oakville 'Maplebrook District The highlight of the gathering was the presentation of the Canada Cord to 11 girls in the 'Pathfinders' units. The CC is one of the highest achievements a Girl Guide can attain. These girls are 14-15 years old and worked from 2-3 years to earn this award. They had to meet over 100 challenges to be successful, ranging from community service activities to home and family activities and camping adventures. Dignitaries attending included Oakville South MPP Gary Carr and Girl Guides of Canada Provincial Commissioner, Isabel Kerr. * Students honoured for business achievements ^ Three Oakville students were honoured last week at the Halton Regional competition of the OBEA (Ontario Business Educators' Association), which highlights student achievements in Business Studies in several subject areas. Forty Halton high school students from both school boards were evaluated in word processing, traditional keyboarding (novice and open category), and accounting (general level, advanced level, and OAC). Alana Ferraro and Venessa Mucci, both of St. Ignatius of Loyola Secondary School, placed sec­ ond and third, respectively, in the word processing subject area, and Sebastien Bourgon of St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School placed second in advanced level accounting. "This annual competition is designed to stimu­ late interest in the business education curricula while recognizing excellence in business education subjects," said Suzanne Rolland, business teacher at St. Thomas Aquinas. "The c o m p e t i t i o n , which was open to Grade 9 to OAC level students, fos­ ters a spirit of challenge to work under pressure and enables students to measure them­ selves against then- peers throughout the region." The top three regional results in each subject area will be forwarded to the provincial OBEA level for evaluation against students from other districts. The Certified M a n a g e m e n t Accountants of Ontario and the Certified General Accountants of Ontario prepared the accounting contests.
