Too often when someone is mentally ill, the stigma attached is difficult to shake. It shouldn't be that way. With increasing stress being felt by both adults and children, it's likely that most families have experienced mental illness first­ hand. The difficulty with mental illness is that i t's often the underlying cause of other problems. And that reality was brought home recently b H alton's A lcohol and Drug A ssessm ent Prevention and Treatm ent Program or ADAPT. As front-line workers with youth, the ADAPT staff has found that where there' alcohol and or drug abuse, there's usually some kind of mental problem involved. But as ADAPT noted in a report to Halton Region's health and services committee, recently, since drugs and alcohol are dealt with by one provincial ministry and mental illness another, victims of both problems are shunted around. The result can result in a feeling of futility that just further fuels the problem. ADAPT has proposed a day treatment program for these young people and through regional council, want $463,000 from the province on a continuing basis. All of which brings us back to the provincial election and the kind of options being explored to help those with mental problems. Like the Liberals, we find it interesting for Premier Mike Harris to now say he's concerned about the province's mentally ill and their well being. Especially since it was his government that shut down Ontario psychiatric facilities. Yesterday Harris said he would take the mentally ill off the street if they posed a danger to themselves or others. Just where he'd put these individuals is another matter. The premier went so far as to blame previous Ontario administrations for pushing patients out of institutions where they were getting help. Huh? Now he's supposed to be the champion of the mentally ill? Get real Mike. ...from the 'are we going to let them get away with that?' file comes the following tidbit....it seems that the esteemed municipality to the west, ie. the City o f Burlington, has approved spending $77,000 on constructing a landscaped entrance to the City at the QEW-Burloak Drive interchange...it's looking at cloning that concept at two other entrances to the City that could see $231,000 spent...the project will include rock from the Niagara Escarpment and three flagpoles complete with banners mimicking sails...the logic, and i t's pretty obvious, is to make people entering the City boundaries, to take note of where they are in the megalopolis that is the corridor from Hamilton to Oshawa...the question is simple: will the Town o f Oakville respond to the challenge and make a similar investment?...as it stands now, the best entrance to the town is the effort Bronte made on each end of Lakeshore Road... □ □ □ ...last week we mentioned the differences in the printed matter being circulated by the provincial Liberals and Progressive Conservatives and lam ented that we hadn't seen anything from the New Democratic Party...we're now pleased to report we have seen the NDP booklet...it's a 5" x 8" green effort with orange and yellow letters with the following statement 'Today's NDP Clearly on your side."....now you know...our only comment is for the NDP to lose the orange type...let's get with it people.... "This is a sell-out for the people of Trafalgar, and just for the sale of a half-dozen people," said Councillor Crutcher. "I just hope the $34,000 we have earmarked for a park will be spent for park purposes and not dribbled away. Council had previously set the wheels in motion for the expropriation of Alex Wilson's Lakeshore Highway East property for a Southeast Trafalgar Park, and County Judge Wilson Robinson had set an expropriation figure of $34,205. However, Mr. Wilson instituted Court of Appeal action. As a result of this, Council has agreed to withdraw its expropriation proceedings in return for an agreement from Mr. Wilson that he will clean up the property. - The Oakville Record-Star, May 13, 1959 3 0 years ago Since the new liberalized divorce law went into effect last July, Halton County divorce applications have almost tripled. In 1967 under the old law, there were 98 applications for divorce, but since July 2, 1968, when the new law became effective, 247 applications have been received. The most frequent reason listed in the divorce cases is separation for three years. This was not grounds under the old law. The next most frequent is adultery which was grounds under the old law as well. This pattern is true both in Halton County and Ontario. There are about 100 divorce cases on the docket in Milton before Supreme Court Justice King. The one year agreement provides for a two-step pay raise amount to an increase between 6.1 per cent and 6.8 per cent over-all, President of Local 1 of the Ontario Nurses Association Pat Couchman said yesterday.
