Humane society investigating after dead puppy found in Oakville NEWS Foul play not ruled out The Oakville & M ilton Humane Society is ask­ ing for the public's help in determ ining how a dead puppy came to be in the Cornwall Road and Cross Avenue area on A p ril 11. OMHS animal protec­ tion o fficers were called to the area, where they discovered the remains o f a flu ffy tan and white m ixed breed dog w ith black around its face. The puppy weighed approxim ately five pounds and was found next to a puppy pee pad. It is unclear how long the puppy was dead, how­ ever, o fficers suspect it died recently. Necropsy reports have not ruled out foul play. The OMHS investiga­ tion is now attempting to determine whether the puppy's death was an act o f animal cruelty. How a fugitive raccoon on a truck from New York changed rabies in Halton Halton region reports highest ever human rabies encounters for 2017 ALEXANDRA HECK aheck@metroland.com Ontario was virtually free o f raccoon strain ra­ bies before 2015, when it's believed that a raccoon on a truck from New York brought the disease back. Since that time, rabies rates have spiked across the GTA, including Halton Region where public health officials received re­ ports of 1,118 human to ani­ mal exposures. When the report was brought to Halton Region council, staff said that the Aldershot area in Halton had the worst problem with raccoons. Since October 4, 2016, 15 raccoons and 11 skunks have tested positive for ra­ bies in Halton. Since the beginning of this year, there have been over 397 cases o f raccoon strain rabies across Brant, Haldimand, Halton, Ham­ ilton and Niagara. "Vaccination o f domes- tic animals is the single most effective measure for rabies prevention," reads the staff report send to council. The province stipulates that every cat or dog under three years o f age must have the vaccination. In Halton, Ministry of Natural Resource staff are continuing to disperse ra­ bies vaccine baits for rac­ coons in the area.
