As residential swimming pools are involved in nearly half of all drowning and near drowning incidents among preschoolers, the City of Burlington is offering free backyard pool safety clinics. They will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 5 and Saturday, May 26 at the Angela Coughlan Pool at M.M. Robinson High School. The clinics will provide pool owners with the tools to hopefully stay safe when playing in and around a backyard pool. The training is for anyone who owns a pool or a hot tub. The course will provide the owner with information about injury prevention, emergency scene assessment, pool safety equipment, basic water rescue skills and first aid training. " Installing proper pool covers, fencing and drains are life-saving precautions pool owners can take to protect their friends and families," states a City of Burlington press release. The Ontario Lifesaving Society says that drowning is the second leading cause of preventable death for children under 10, with children under five particularly at risk. For the society's most recent Canadian statistics, from 2017, 63 per cent of victims under the age of five drowned while alone near water, and 92 per cent drowned while supervision was absent or distracted. The Canadian Red Cross says that pools accounted for seven per cent of all drowning deaths in Canada in 2009-13, remaining consistent with previous years. The majority of pool drownings occurred in private pools (86 per cent), continuing to be the primary setting where children under the age of five most often drown (43 per cent). City officials also say that after winter it is important to keep safety in mind when draining a pool. Always pump the water to an open area away from the pool to keep the water from going under the lining or concrete, as this can lift the pool out of the ground or cause the pool liner to bulge. The best location to drain your pool is into a storm drain. Due to chemical content, it is recommended that you don't drain a pool into ponds, creeks or streams as it is harmful to wildlife and the watershed. " Backyard Pool Safety Clinics are a great way to remind pool owners that even if everyone in the house can swim, accidents do happen when playing around or in a pool and precautions must be taken. Accidents are often preventable," said Chris Glenn, Burlington's director of parks and recreation.
