Oakville's Laker Ener­ gy Products has received a $144 million contract from Bruce Power for its Major Component Replacement (MCR) project. The local nuclear man­ ufacturer made the an­ nouncement Monday, April 23 from its 835 Fourth Line facility before an au­ dience o f around 100 em­ ployees. Laker Energy Products w ill provide end fittings, liners and flow elements for Bruce Power's MCR project. The project is scheduled to begin in 2020. "We have an incredibly skilled workforce, which looks forward to the chal­ lenge o f manufacturing the high-quality parts that w ill allow the Bruce Power reactors to produce low- cost energy until 2064," said Chris Hughes, Laker Energy president and CEO. "Nuclear electricity is the backbone o f Ontario's energy supply, and through this agreement, Laker Energy Products w ill continue to play an im­ portant role in providing this important resource." Mike Rencheck, Bruce Power's president and CEO, said this agreement is significant for Bruce Power, the people o f Laker Energy and for the Oak­ ville area because the com­ ponents w ill be manufac­ tured locally. "Today's announcement provides more job stability for the people o f Laker, which w ill result in in­ creased investment in Oakville's economy for many years," said Ren- check. "Bruce Power's Life-Ex­ tension Program is creat­ ing and sustaining 22,000 highly skilled jobs across Ontario annually, includ­ ing here in Oakville, while also investing $4 billion an­ nually into the province's economy." The $144 million con­ tract is expected to gener­ ate a number o f spinoff jobs in Oakville. The Laker Energy con­ tract was only part o f $914 million in advanced manu­ facturing contracts Bruce Power awarded for its MCR project April 23. The project is intended to extend the life o f the Bruce Nuclear Generating Station, which is owned by Ontario Power Genera­ tion, to 2064. "I am so thrilled to see Laker Energy Products creating high-tech jobs in Oakville thanks to the in­ novation of the company and the investments being made by our government," said Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn. "Clean air, sustainable energy and the creation of good, high-paying jobs is at the core of our long-term energy plan, and the suc­ cess o f Laker Energy is a great example o f this." Oakville Mayor Rob Burton also weighed in on the Laker Energy contract. "This agreement clearly recognizes the excellent, high-quality precision work done by your employ- ees," he said. "This partnership will protect the jobs of your highly skilled employees and support the growth of our local economy." Burlington M PP Elea­ nor McMahon congratu­ lated Laker Energy Prod­ ucts and Bruce Power for working together to ensure a clean, affordable and reli­ able supply o f electricity for the people o f Ontario, for many years to come. "I'm excited and very proud to see Laker Energy continue to grow and play a valuable role in Ontario's nuclear supply chain," she said. "Bruce Power's MCR project ensures genera­ tions o f Ontarians will have clean energy they can count on, while supporting hundreds o f Ontario busi­ nesses and creating, as well as keeping good jobs in communities like ours." Bruce Power supplies 30 per cent o f Ontario's elec­ tricity.
