Oakville Beaver Weekend 31Sunday, May 16, 1999 Winter chosen to represent Olympic athletes Canadian Equestrian Team mem­ ber and Oakville resident Victoria Winter has been named the new ath­ lete liaison to the Canadian Olympic Foundation (COF). "This is the first time that the Canadian Olympic Foundation has had a formal athlete liaison from the Canadian Olympic Association (COA) Athletes' Council," said Winter. "It is an honour to have been asked to represent Olympic athletes in this position." Winter was nominated to this posi­ tion by the COA Athletes' Council at the 1999 Canadian Olympic Association Congress and Athletes' Council meeting in Fredericton, dur­ ing the week of April 21-25. The COF is an organization whose primary objectives are to fundraise for the Canadian Olympic Athlete Fund as well as to provide financial man­ agement for the Canadian Olympic Association's segregated funds. The COF Board of Governors has accept­ ed Winter's nomination. In the position of athlete liaison Winter will, at the request of the COF Board of Governors, sit, or arrange for other athletes to sit, on various com­ mittees of the COF, and to provide athlete input where required. Winter is also the equestrian athlete representative on the COA Athletes' Council. It's a four-year position which rotates around the Olympic equestrian disciplines and is currently with the discipline of dressage. Winter, 29, was the individual and team bronze medalist at the 1995 Pan American Games in Argentina. Winter is a Corporate Trust Lawyer with The Trust Company of Bank of Montreal in Toronto. B urloak Canoe C lub members are out on Sixteen Mile Creek in full force, training for a season packed with fun and competition leading up to the Canadian championships in August. Burloak has won this championship for the last two years. The club caters to all abilities and ages: the elementary group (8-14); high performance development and crew (15 years and older); and masters (25 and older). The Burloak Canoe Club will be holding another open house and registration for their spring and summer programs this coming Saturday (May 22), 9 a.m.-noon. Come down to the clubhouse on Navy Street and tour the facility and see first hand, national and Ontario level paddlets training on the water. But don't be intimidated. While the club has a stable of international athletes like 1996 Atlanta Olympic veteran Gavin Maxwell and Canadian Sports Hall of Famer (and a 1984 Los Angeles gold medalist) Larry Cain, the club is equally home to a huge contingent of grass roots paddlets, par­ ticularly in the masters division where the camaraderie and social aspect is as important as the competitive aspect. Since the inaugural event in 1996, the OTMH Classic has become a wonderful community event in Oakville and also an important stop on the competitive and recreational running circuit in southern Ontario. Last year, $24,000 was raised and this year the goal is $50,000. Everyone will enjoy the scenic route, refreshments, massages, enter­ tainment and the chance to win fabulous prizes.
