Tabbies donate teddies to refugees By Amber Clarke SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Thomas A. Blakelock high school stu dents collected hundreds of teddy bears and toys for the Kosovar refugee children coming to Canada. Jim Mate's grade 12 World History Class initiated the plan, and within 24 hours the school was overwhelmed with donations. "We have an absolutely overwhelming number of teddy bears and toys donated by Blakelock's students for the refugee chil dren coming to Canada," said Mate. "It is a completely humanitarian gesture, not polit ical at all, it's about kids caring about kids." On Wednesday morning Matz dis cussed the idea of a teddy bear and toy drive with his 8:30 am class, and they loved the idea. By 9:30 am the students had cov ered the school with signs and announce ments were being made. By Thursday morning the school had collected hundreds of teddy bears and toys. "The kids jumped all over the idea Within 15 minutes they were making signs," explained Mate. "The kids came together and generated a lot of enthusiasm. They were fabulous. It was a complete humanitarian effort." "The students did it all. Made the signs and announcements, and collected the teddy bears and packaged them. One of my students works at Lansing Buildall and he jumped in his pick-up truck to go and get containers for the bears," said Mate. Blakelock's donations of teddy bears and toys was expected to be sent to the Canadian Armed Forces Base in Trenton, Thursday afternoon. The first group of Canada bound Kosovar refugees are expected soon. Canada has agreed to accept as many as 5,000 refugees from the war-tom country.
