Displaying pride and consideration for Oakville has always been a philos­ ophy of the Oak-land staff and man­ agement, demonstrated by their out­ standing customer service initiatives. "If you sell a car you have a cus­ tomer," said general manager David Sand, "but if you service the customer you have a relationship." The Team Selling Approach is an innovative idea that will ensure some­ one is always available to look after a customer--someone the customer knows and deals with on a regular basis. "Apparently this was an idea used by real estate professionals," said sales manager Sean Draper. "One of our sales representatives saw an article about it and thought it would work for our customers. He approached the owner Len Sanci, and general sales manager Lorenzo Continisio, and we all agreed that this was an excellent idea." "And that's impressive when you consider our extended hours," said Draper. Oak-land is often Monday to Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. "That's a lot of hours for one person to cover. Lou Machado and Alan Ives, who came up with the idea, make up the team known as AIM (to aim higher). They have worked as a team for 18 months. Jim Milford and Grant Buchanan make up GOM (grumpy old men), who really aren't all that grumpy and have worked together as a team for almost one year. Each member of a team is aware of every aspect of any particular client, and they keep a log that records calls, appoint­ ments, deliveries and cus­ tomer follow-ups. Communication is vital in this approach, so that the responsibility of updating the representatives does not fall on the client. Details must be kept up-to-date so that both members of the team are in sync with each other 100% of the time. These teams are made up of long-standing reps who have built up a strong cus­ tomer base over the years. Team members can also buddy up to take time off in such a way that it will not affect the customer. "It's great because we know how the other works and we're in sync with one another," said Milford (GOM member). "If I go out to get the car, Grant will already have put the plates on it. I also know that if I'm not here, my customers are still in good hands." Draper says he's had only positive feedback on the Team Selling Approach. "This strategy is great for both the customers and my staff. It increases the quali­ ty of life for the sales reps--they don't bum out and become ineffective. Instead they're fresh and aware of everything that's going on within the dealer­ ship. "Our sales representa­ tives haye always been independent of the struc­ tured flow of a dealership," he added. "They don't have to run and get authorization on every decision. We apply the Market Value Pricing Plan, which holds no sur­ prises. We quote the actual price, including freight and air taxes and we don't charge an administration fee." Oak-land Lincoln Mercury has been an inte­ gral part of Oakville for 29 years.
