- Description
- Trafalgar was slow to form its own fire brigade. After years of relying on the Bronte and Oakville brigades, in 1935 Forbes Wilson was named fire chief with George Wright, deputy chief. It was in 1939 that a new pumper arrived and kept on the Eaton estate just east of the town of Oakville on Lakeshore Road at Morrison Road. (The permanent fire station on the east side of Trafalgar Township was not built until 1949.) Dick Dando, who lived and worked on the Eaton estate was the volunteer firefighter receiving the alarm calls, alerting the firefighters and maintaining the truck. This new firefighting force was Trafalgar Township No. 2. Bronte, the older service, was Trafalgar Township No. 1.
In this photograph, the volunteer firefighters from both stations are at Trafalgar No. 2, the Eaton estate (called Ballymena). The truck is likely the new Ford Bickle Seagrave 420-per-minute pumper with a 200-gallon water tank, a 35-foot ladder, 1,000 feet of 2 1/2 hose, 500 feet of one inch booster hose and more.
