The number of new trees planted in Oakville as part of its recent Arbour Week celebrations has sur-Week celebrations has sur-W passed 10,000 this year. "Trees contribute sig- nificantly to our town's liv- ability," said Mayor Rob Burton. "As a community, let's work together to pro- tect, preserve and grow our urban forest." The largest amount of available tree-plantingavailable tree-plantinga space in Oakville is on pri- vate property. PLANT is a new initia- tive by the town that en- courages residents and businesses to plant trees on their property to help the town improve its cano- py coverage from the cur- rent 27.8 per cent to 40 per cent. Residents can add trees they've planted to the tree counter on the PLANT web page. The site also provides a list of native trees, tree planting and care tips, and information on Oakville's subsidized backyard tree planting program. The town will be plant- ing 48,000 trees this year on town streets, parks and woodlands. The three ma- ple trees at town hall were planted recently in honour of Arbour Week, an inter- national holiday intended to encourage people to plant more trees.
