She said the marathon helps fund the refugee camp where she stayed with Zanoguera and a fam- ily of six. There were four rooms in total, and each has cushions and carpet on the ground. The small home is made of sand brick and the roofs are metal. The washroom is a hole in the ground. All the kids have asth- ma from the sand con- stantly blowing in the wind, she said. "Because it's a desert, it's not for a child at all," she said. "The water comes in these bags, and they sit there for days. They can't really shower and it's not good conditions." But what they lack in luxury, they more than make up for in socializa- tion. "If they meet someone, they are welcomed as fami- ly," she said. "If someone comes to their homes, they feed them and genuinelyfeed them and genuinelyf care. "I'm so skeptical of peo- ple, so I was thinking 'why are these people so nice to me?'" she said. "They were constantly thanking me for making this (documen-for making this (documen-f tary) happen. "Every single person is as genuine as the next," she continued. "It's the connec- tion with the people that struck my heart. Since I've gotten back, I want to find that in my own country. She's got big goals, con- sidering her age, and what she's already accom- plished: She's worked as a director, producer and shooter on multiple digital projects for the Globe and Mail, Maclean's magazine, Sportsnet, CBCNews.ca, Flare magazine, and more. She's trilingual, speaking English, French and Span- ish. She's also training as a competitive boxer. She hopes to return to visit the Sawhrawi people again this year. She explained that the organizers of the mara- thon use funds to promote community engagement and sport within the refu- gee camp, with a focus on encouraging women to participate and educating youth. Despite the harsh cli- mate and little access to re- sources in the desert, the Sahrawi people have formed a functioning com-formed a functioning com-f munity. But it's activities like the marathon that en- courage a higher quality of living. As such, 10 per cent of her own project's profit - once expenses are paid - will be donated to the West- ern Sahara Marathon. Meanwhile, the Holy Trinity Secondary School graduate has maintained a very close relationship with Zanoguera, who fell to the ground after she crossed the finish line be- cause she was exhausted. "I was in limbo between wanting to give her a hug and wanting to film it," she laughed. "We went through a lot together," she said. "Speak- ing with her at the end of the day (of the marathon) we were crying. It was part joy and part of being just overwhelmed." She said Zanoguera was well prepared for the mar- athon, even though she was training in the oppo- site conditions - snow vs. scorching heat and sand. Girouard is now work- ing on the editing process after taking some time away from the project. She plans to have it ready to go this summer and is hopeful it will be picked up so that it reaches as many people as possi- ble. Through online fund- raising earlier this year, she raised about US$6,000 to help comer some costs, but she admitted it's more of a self-funded passion project. "I'll look into selling it; I was looking at grants, but I will submit it to film festi- vals," she said. "I don't want to give myself the pressure of that right now. My goal is to get as many people as possible to see it, even if that means putting it on YouTube. Go to you- tu.be/7gb4x6d6JfU to see some clips from the film. COMMUNITY lContinued from page 53 Part of documentary's profits to be donated to marathon All things '80s were cele- brated during a longtime Oakville resident's annual fundraising bash in sup- port of the Canadian Can- cer Society Halton Unit. Frank Fortino - a local resident of 44 years who spins a sick beat under the alias DJ Frankie F. Fresh - held his second annual themed party on April 6. The Back To The Galaxy event - a throwback to the high school dances he once hosted, and drawing 440 guests - brought in $21,550 for the Canadian Cancer Society. Along with a host of cos- tumed characters, there were appearances by some famous Hollywood vehi- cles, including the General Lee and everyone's favou- rite time-travelling DeLo- rean from Back To The Fu- ture. Fortino's employer - Cardinal Health - was once again a major contributor to the event, matching $5,000 U.S. Other local sponsors were Kids & Company, Chi Chi Laser Studios, toron- toticketmarket.com, Cor- nerstone Fine Homes, Daredevil Hockey, GTA Equipment Rentals, Mer- cedes Benz Oakville, Auto- macs Collision, Inspired Flooring and GX Transpor- tation.
