57| O akville B eaver | T hursday,M ay 31,2018 insidehalton.com The Brain Injury Asso- ciation of Peel and Halton (BIAPH) is set to pull back the curtain on brain inju- ries through the Unmask- ing Brain Injury Project. In recognition of Brain Injury Awareness Month, people living with brain in- juries are making the invis- ible visible by unmasking their stories through a public artistic display of masks. The provincewide ini- tiative will make a stop at Oakville's Real Canadian Superstore (201 Oak Park Blvd.) on Thursday, June 7. The event runs from 6 to 8 p.m. All are welcome to attend. BIAPH will be talking about the project and its impact on survivors, fami- ly, friends and the commu- nity. Unmasking Brain Injury Project coming to Oakville The world's highest- ranking Taekwondo grand master is coming to town. Ninth-degree black belt grand master Rhee Ki Ha will be in Oakville this weekend (June 2-3) as a spe- cial guest at the CanAm championships at Sheri- dan College, much to the delight of those at locally- based Morningstar Taek- wondo. "It's an honour to be cho- sen to host the CanAm's this year but even more to have such a Taekwondo legend here as our guest," said the club's head in- structor Mike Morning- star. Having recently turned 80, Rhee Ki Ha is still teach- ing with the same approach and rigour as when he stud- ied with Taekwondo found- er General Choi Hong Hi, who described him as the "greatest-ever student of Taekwondo." Born in Seoul in 1938, Rhee Ki Ha started his mar- tial arts training at a young age. He studied judo and su- mo from his father as well as karate from his primary school teacher. Rhee Ki Ha joined the 35th infantry division of the Korean army in 1956 and soon after became the Taekwondo instructor to the Special Forces and American military person- nel. In 1967, Rhee Ki Ha took the bold step of leaving his homeland and family to come halfway across the world to the U.K. in order to spread the art he loved. The mainstay of his op- eration was the Royal Air Force. Servicemen who had learned the art in Sin- gapore invited grand mas- ter Rhee to teach in the U.K. and the classes proved to be very popular. During the months of November and December 1973, grand mas- ter Rhee Ki Ha accompa- nied Taekwondo's founder, two-star retired Korean Ar- my General Choi Hong Hi, as part of a specially select- ed Demonstration Team. They, along with other masters, toured Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Far East. A total of 20 countries were visited and new Taekwondo branches established in five of these countries. After Saturday's CanAm championships - which will bring together top black and colour belts from across Canada and the U.S. - Rhee Ki Ha will host a three-hour training session at Sheridan Sunday morn- ing. To tournament is open to the public. For more information, visit canamchampionship- s.ca.
