Virginia Gomez de la Torre/photo TRAVEL Gardner-Spiece said the centre needs more of the latter to help field more calls on its distress lines - 905-849-4541 (Oakville); 905- 681-1488 (Burlington); and 905-877-1211 (north Halton). The 24-hour phone ser- vice is offered seven days a week. There is also an on- line text and chat service for anyone who doesn'tfor anyone who doesn'tf want to speak - both pro- vide anonymity to those reaching out. Gardner-Spiece said the centre has already re- ceived 20 per cent more calls this year over last year's 15,000 calls. "But there were a num- ber of calls we couldn't an- swer because of a shortage of volunteers," she ex- plained, noting volunteers go through an intensive screening process and eight-week training pro- gram. "We follow the befriend- ing model... sometimes people have an issue before it escalates to the point where they need medical attention, they sometimes just need someone to talk to and that's what we're here for," Gardner-Spiece continued. "We're not here to tell you what to do because we believe you're the best au- thor of your story. We're here to listen, validate. If people want to explore op- tions to help deal with their issues, our volunteers will certainly do that." She added the centre gets a range of calls from loneliness to crisis and sui- cide, but recommended if a situation is critical, people call 911.
