7 | O akville B eaver | T hursday,D ecem ber 6,2018 insidehalton.com When the newly-elected version of the Halton Cath- olic District School Board held its first meeting on Tuesday, those who have been following its activi- ties will have noticed a sea change. After a vast majority of the outgoing board mem- bers declined to run for re- election - and Oakville trustee Anthony Quinn was defeated - eight new faces will grace the nine-faces will grace the nine-f person board. Oakville representative Helena Ka- rabela was the only re- turning trustee at the board's inaugural meeting at Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School in Mil- ton. The new members are Peter DeRosa and Nancy Guzzo for Oakville; Janet O'Hearn-Czarnota re- presenting Halton Hills; Tim O'Brien, Brenda Ag- new and Vincent Iantoma- si for Burlington; and Pat- rick Murphy and Marvin Duarte for Milton. We reached out to all of the new candidates to get to know them a bit better, and will publish their re- sponses as they come in. Nancy Guzzo earned 4,652 votes (17.92 per cent) in her effort to become an Oakville Catholic trustee in October's election. She came second only to Peter DeRosa, with whom she ran for election on a three- person slate that also in- cluded Jeff Mamer. Mamer was not elected, while board incumbent Helena Karabela took the third po- sition. During the campaign, Guzzo expressed signifi- cant concern that the board was earning a bad reputation due to the con- troversy around its Sancti- ty of Life motion, which briefly halted school fund- raising for charities that support abortion, stem- cell research or medically- assisted death. In 2008, Guzzo was part of a 20-person protest out- side Oakville's Waterford Long Term Care Centre, and was identified in a news article at the time as the Ontario Federation of Health Care Workers' spokesperson. The protesters were at- tempting to draw attention to what they saw as not enough provincial funding to properly care for those living in such facilities.
