The program, which is offered at select schools in the board, had been set to relocate to nearby St. Ber- nadette school in Septem- ber. Students already in ex- tended French, which starts in Grade 5, would stay at St. Matthew, while the new crop would begin at St. Bernadette. On Tues- day, trustees voted to delay the move for a year, saying it would give parents more time to plan and allow board staff to prepare a de- tailed report explaining the capacity issues that led to the change. The motion to delay was introduced by Oakville trustee Helena Karabela. An amendment from Bur- lington trustee Brenda Ag- new requires staff to pro- vide a "thorough and com- plete" report that explains the capacity issues and oth- er drivers that led to the change. At the board's Nov. 20 meeting, Director of Educa- tion Pat Daly explained that French programs are best located in schools that can accommodate growth, min- imize or possibly eliminate future relocations, andfuture relocations, andf minimize the use of porta- bles across the system. He said staff selected St. Ber- nadette because it appears to have sustainable enrol- ment and the ability to house the program within the school, whereas St. Matthew requires in- creased use of portables. Milton trustee Patrick Murphy was among those to vote against the motion to delay the move, suggest- ing it would give parents "false hope" that the pro- gram might remain perma- nently at St. Matthew. He said trustees had already been provided with a report on the reasons for the move, and that it was with- in the authority of the di- rector of education to make the same decision next year. Murphy, along with Bur- lington trustee Vincent Ian- tomasi, also expressed con- cerns that the decision may be outside of the trustees' purview, since operational issues fall under staff's re- sponsibilities.
