Click on "Pages Select" to see the front of the blue Parks Canada card showing all photographs taken, and then on the 7 individual photos put into this record.

Legal description: Lot 8, PL 948; Oakville S/T 97450. Designated under Part IV of the OHA.

The house is known variously as "Bush House" and "Hopgood Estate".

The original Crown patent was given to King's College, Toronto in 1828. The house was built in 1866 by the Hopgood family, an early tenant was W.E. Hagaman, owner/manager of a large grain company, and also an importer of ready-made American goods with a store in Bronte and a larger building in Oakville.

Click on the link to the Town of Oakville Inventory report by Laurie Smith Heritage Consulting has more information on the Hagaman business and family, and the other families who lived at 1118 Lakeshore Road East.

The Parks Canada photographer recorded that the original house owner was John Robertson, and that the house had been built in about 1865. John Robertson was a farmer who bought the property in 1880 and sold it in 1885.

The farm (estate) was subdivided in 1959 with the 1866 house becoming 1118 Lakeshore Road East. The barn was apparently rebuilt to be the house at 83 Brentwood Road.
Notes
In December 1971, January 1972, Parks Canada photographed those buildings that were 100 or more years old. This Canadian Inventory of Heritage Buildings was a Centennial Project.

The Trafalgar Township Historical Society has worked with Parks Canada and Library and Archives Canada to find these photographs in the area of Trafalgar Township and the city of Oakville, Ontario. The collection will grow as we have time to collect and prepare the images.

The TTHS is also sending the images to the Town of Oakville Heritage Planners to increase local availability and to ensure local preservation.

Each TTHS internet record will show the back of the identifying information card first. This is to prevent any errors in reading the handwritten address held up on a clipboard for each address - we have noted that sometimes the address number is illegible or incorrect.

At the top of each TTHS record, you will find "pages" to click on to view the various photographs.

All TTHS records in this collection can be found in one step by clicking on the "Groups" link on the right of your screen, "Parks Canada. Canadian Inventory of Heritage Buildings, 1970-1972. Trafalgar Township & Oakville."
