- Description
- As per the blue index card prepared by Parks Canada at the time of photographing, Mr. Rey (Roy?) Charters owned this house. The 1988 Bowers Street Address Directory lists the owner as Rae R. Charters.
The date of its construction was estimated to be 1865.
The building is Designated as a Heritage Property under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act by the Town of Oakville. The property legal description is Con 2 SDS PT Lot 11. The house was named Laurel Hill House.
Andrew Kitchen first purchased the land from the Crown in 1807. It was then sold to UEL Samuel Crippens in 1826, and then to Alexander Proudfoot who built a one story frame building in 1827.
A later noted owner was James Arnott, owner from 1834-1847. In 1854, the farm was sold to James Robertson who constructed the house that still exists in 1858.
- Notes
- In 1971-1972, Parks Canada photographed those buildings that were 100 or more years old. This Canadian Inventory of Heritage Buildings was a Centennial Project.
The Trafalgar Township Historical Society has worked with Parks Canada and Library and Archives Canada to find these photographs in the area of Trafalgar Township and the city of Oakville, Ontario. The collection will grow as we have time to collect and prepare the images.
The TTHS is also sending the images to the Town of Oakville Heritage Planners to increase local availability and to ensure local preservation.
Each TTHS internet record will show the back of the identifying information card first. This is to prevent any errors in reading the handwritten address held up on a clipboard for each address - we have noted that sometimes the address number is illegible or incorrect.
All TTHS records in this collection can be found in one step by clicking on the "Groups" link on the right of your screen, "Parks Canada. Canadian Inventory of Heritage Buildings, 1970-1972. Trafalgar Township & Oakville." - Inscriptions
