A motion to that effect -- recently put forth by Oak- ville Mayor Rob Burton and Milton Mayor Gord Krantz -- was unanimously ap- proved by regional council. The resolution asks the pro- vincial government to de- sign and deliver a sufficient- ly scaled court facility in a timely fashion. Plans to build a consoli- dated courthouse for Hal- ton were cancelled last year. The building was slated for provincial lands near the intersection of William Hal- ton Parkway and Third Line, just north of Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospi- tal. At the time, Attorney General Doug Downey indi- cated the Province was moving away from brick and mortar investments and shifting its focus to more online services. Council's motion ac- knowledges the moderniza- tion efforts, but contends a new courthouse that ade- quately meets current and future needs is still very necessary to replace the ag- ing facility in Milton. "Our police chief advises that the present courthouse can not be fixed. It is dan- gerous to the people who have to work there," said Burton. "We urge the Province to rethink their cancellation decision. We don't have to have an $800-million palace; we just need to have a court- house that will keep people safe and allow access to jus- tice." Burton's sentiments were echoed by those around the council table, in- cluding Oakville Coun. Pa- van Parmar, who noted that calling off the project is also hurting the local economy. Construction of the facil- ity was originally projected to create 600 jobs.
