Halton -- alongside the entire province -- has been put in a shutdown that began Saturday (Apr. 3). The latest restriction is expected to last at least four weeks. During the April 1 announcement, Pre- mier Doug Ford described the situation as "very, very serious," with variants of con- cern "spreading rapidly" and leading to younger people in hospital and the risk of death being 1.5 times higher than the ini- tial COVID-19 virus. "We are fighting a new enemy," he said, adding this is a "new pandemic" and "we've never had more Ontarians in intensive care than we do today." As for the weekly COVID-19 cases, the region's website shows that from March 26 to April 1 there were 430 new cases in Hal- ton, up from 366 the previous week. As of April 1, the number of active cases stood at 473, including 149 in Oakville, 155 in Milton, 108 in Burlington, and 61 in Hal- ton Hills. There have been 11,058 COVID-19 cases in Halton since the pandemic start- ed, with 10,385 marked as resolved and 200 deaths. -- With files from Louie Rosell Here's a weekly roundup of COVID-19 cases and news.
