While they officially made their debut in 1960, the Paralympic Games were around in different iterations prior to that in- augural year. A number of the sports played today were introduced to the Games in unconventional ways. Here are seven things you probably didn't know about the Paralympics. SPORTING EVENTS FOR ATH- LETES WITH AN IMPAIRMENT AC- TUALLY BEGAN IN THE 1800S In 1888, Berlin became home to the first sports fa- cilities for those with hearing impairments. However, Paralympic sports did not become as widely known until after the Second World War. THE PARALYMPIC GAMES WERE FIRST KNOWN AS THE STOKE MANDEVILLE GAMES The Stoke Mandeville Games first appeared at the 1948 Olympics in Lon- don. Introduced by Dr. Ludwig Guttmann, a doc- tor who helped rehabili- tate war veterans at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in England, the first compet- itors were injured individ- uals who served in the Second World War. There were 16 competi- tors in total and they par- ticipated in what is now known as Paralympic ar- chery. TOKYO WILL BE THE FIRST COUNTRY TO HOST THE PARA- LYMPIC GAMES TWICELYMPIC GAMES TWICEL Tokyo first hosted the Paralympic Games in 1964. This year will mark the country's second time, making it the first-ever nation in history to host the Games more than once. THE WORD PARALYMPIC MEANS "ALONGSIDE THE OLYM- PICS" "Para" is a Greek prepo- sition meaning "along- side." According to the In- ternational Paralympic Committee (IPC), this means that "Paralympics are the parallel Games to the Olympics and illus- trates how the two move- ments exist side-by-side." THE SYMBOL FOR THE PARA- LYMPICS REPRESENTS THELYMPICS REPRESENTS THEL COMING TOGETHER OF ATH- LETES FROM AROUND THE WORLD The Paralympic sym- bol is of three "agitos" that are red, blue and green, respectively. The word "agitos" means "I move" in Latin and the colours re- present the colours most prominent in the flags of countries around the world. THE PARALYMPIC SPORT WHEELCHAIR RUGBY USED TO BE KNOWN AS "MUR- DERBALL" Wheelchair rugby was initially called "murder- ball," due to the fact that it is a rough, full-contact sport that involves the clashing of wheelchairs. The sport was created by Canadian Duncan Camp- bell in 1976. Campbell, who has quadriplegia, in- vented the game with his friends while waiting tofriends while waiting tof work out at a rehabilita- tion centre. THERE ARE FOUR PARALYM- PIC VALUES The four Paralympic values, outlined by the IPC, are: courage, deter- mination, inspiration and equality.
