Ralph Robinson -- who, after a lifetime of serving the town, passed away in Ju- ly 2020 at the age of 88 -- will have his name attached to the Bronte Veterans Gar- den, which he helped bring to life. "Ralph worked very very hard for many years with many families of fallen sol- diers, with teachers, with the unions at St. Dominic's (Catholic Elementary School) to bring that to frui- tion," said Sean O'Meara, who along with fellow town councillor Beth Robinson led a successful motion to have the garden renamed in Robinson's memory at a re- cent council meeting. The BVG was unveiled in June of 2011. By then, Robin- son had been working with St. Dominic's for some time. In 2010, he supported the school in its goal to raise the profile of Bronte Road, also known as The Veterans Highway. A student named Corey Maillet proposed "a park and we want to see it be put into action so that people can see how we respect our fallen soldiers." Robinson said at the time: "I was extremely im- pressed with it. Each group had wonderful ideas of their own and every one certain- ly worth consideration. There's got to be some way to recognize these heroes a little better and that's what the kids want and at the same time, recognize the kids for what they're trying to do." Robinson served the Town of Oakville for 36 years as a councillor. The late councillor had a number of accolades to his name. He was a philanthro- pist and a member of the Kinsmen Club of Oakville, advocating for a multitude of causes across Oakville. He chaired the Terry Fox Run for a quarter of a centu- ry, was a founding director of the Oakville Sports Hall of Fame and was a director of the Halton Multicultural Council. One of his lesser known jobs was being the chair of the Bronte Butterfly Associ- ation. Mayor Rob Burton re- membered Robinson at the Nov. 15 meeting as "always a constructive and positive person" and acknowledged "many years of friendship" between the two.
