To some of the older idents this may not appeal, but when a community is on the march the way Oakville and district is at present, a slogan can serve several useful purposes. 2 Other communities have found that a eslogan which suitably expressed the desirability of their com- munity as a place to live can become known across the nation. Anyone who has made a motor trip which took them through smaller places will remember how their imagination was stirred and their interest arous- ed by seeing a town's slogan on the highway signs. It has the effect of forceably saying, "These people are proud of their town." FOR OUR YOUTH On this page appears an appeal from the Base- ball association for funds to carry on their work among the youth of the district. We urge everyone to get behind the association with financial support to make it possible for them to once more provide NNN) IY) | Tro gar Tales By Bessie Cairns R.LP. Are we more prosaic these days or is stone engraving too high in cost? The following is an epitaph copied by my mother from a tombstone in Bolsover Church Cemetery, Yorkshire. THE GOLDEN RULE Neler cast @ clout, till May is out . . . is as good advice today as it was in grandma's time. No contribution is too small to help in this work, and we shall gladly forward any donations which people wish to address to the association in our.care. All donations will be acknowledged and a financial report similar to the one we published a few weeks ago will be made at the end of the year. LET THE PEOPLE KNOW Prosperous retailers ave the backbone of any community. They are only able to provide additional service if they have the support of the buying public. No retailer could afford to stay in business if the people of the community go elsewhere to make their purchases. With this in mind the retail section of the Champer of Commerce have decided to conduct a program to publicize the excellent shopping facilities that Oakville provides. well. No amount of steam-kets can keep me from reading, so I am afraid if you are still with me you will have to suffer the conse- quences. The book of my choice happen- ed to be "The Sacred Writings of the World's Great Religions." At a time when we hear so much of racial and religious differences it is somewhat @ surprise to find how infinitesimal these differences really are. You and I 'pat our- selves on the back and say, "Well as far as the other fellow is con- cerned, I always do my best to follow the golden rule" All of which is admirable, but let usinot This is a wise step, for there are always people who, without thinking, go elsewhere to shop and, by ~ 50 doing, make it- harder for their own community to provide the advantages that they are the first to demand. Such people will be reminded by the use of billboards that right in their own shopping centre they can secure everything they need. Also, these billboards will bring to the attention of a wider public the up-and-coming attitude of this community. Pub- licity never hurt anything, and Oakville has much to bring to the attention of the public. Ak out of OF THOSE 'DOOMED TO DIE OF CANCER CAN BE SAVED! A few public' spiried citizens are giving of their time, money and energies to support the work in-the inter- ests of the 'youth of the town, While our intermediate baseball team won the Ontario champion- ship last year, this is only one small section of the work of the association. We have a splendid juvenile team and over 250 boys, ranging in ages from 8 to 16, are playing organized baseball under the supervision bf competent pro- fessional coaches of ability and character. The value of the training of these young future citizens dur- ing the summer months, when they are released from school, is obvious, and it is the hope of the members. of the executive of the Oakville Baseball association that the citizens of the town will rally once again to the support of this splendid work, 4 - Thursday, April 15th, 1945 The campaign for funds will include an appeal to industry, the merchants of the town, a canvass of special names, and a general public appeal. through the col- umns of this newspaper.
