This was Pok- ee's first family and she was very proud of them. She'has always been such a pleasant natured little dog, but the arrival of her wee ones slightly changed her na- ture temporarily. She became a bit crotchety and wouldn't allow man nor beast to go near the litter pen. I was quite surprised when I put my hand in to com- fort her, to hear the menacing growls coming from this hitherto peace loving creature, In the past I'd never known her to get up- set except, of course, during one of her many squabbles with Fud- gee. "Now Po," I said. "Don't carry on like that. I assure you I'm not going to take your babies, nor would I hurt a hair on their tiny heads!" But Po wasn't in a mood to lis- ten to me, nor did she even care to argue. She just continued to growl at me softly, warning me to keep my distance. T have in the past been bitten by a dog, but never by a mother dog with pups. "You sound horrible," I told her. "But you really can't fright en me, old friend." And I put my hand in and patted her silken head. It was funny, but she lick- ed my hand and then continued Thursday evening--7.00-8.00 p.m.| Your Furnace is as good as your| to growl. "Well, Grandma, your grand- children have arrived," I said to Patsy. "Three of them and all doing well. No doubt yowll want to see them soon, so you can boast of your new grandkids!" "I knew they were here," Pat- sy said. "I knew before you did, I sensed it. Jumpin jelly beans and crosse-eyed gum drops, but I could sense it. And besides I heard the little critters doing their ar- rival squeak when I first went out this morning. As for seeing them I ain't got no ambition to see them I think people should let sleeping grandchildren sleep. I'll see them soon enough!" "Well," said Fudgee' from her seat on the window sill, "can you BOARDING KENNELS The Cookee Column Book Three, Entitled: POPO RETURNS BY HERBERT C. MERRY eat that? Her own grandchildren! Her first one too, and she's only luke warm about it. I am so ex- cited I can hardly wait. I would like to see them now. Right now!" And she jumped down onto the floor all ready to go and inspect her new relatives. "You can't go mow, you silly kid," Dribbi chided her. "In fact you can't go near them for quite a while. I'm sure -Popo won't want you, of all people, to go near her family. We'll have to sneak you in for a look when Po is out for a little walk sometime." "Yes, she'll eat you alive if she catches you near her kids," I told Fudgee. "If you value your ears, and your nose, youl better keep your distance." "Well!" exploded Fudgee. "Well of all the ungrateful hussies. And why shouldn't I see her old kids? After all, IT don't intend to eat them. Just wait until she wants a sitter, she meedn't call on me-- she needn't!" "Oh don't get your feathers in a snarl," Patsy chimed in. "You might just as well keep calm about all this. You won't ever be asked to (be a sitter cuz you don't do no sitting with spaniel 'kids. I guess I know. Crippled caterpill- ars, I ought to know. I had six- teen of you kids didn't 1? "Well after a speech like that," I said, "you ought to retire. I can't see why you are so sour. You are a very young grand- mother and you ought to be a very happy one. You have years and years @head of you to be a happy grandmother. Likely as not yowd have dozens of grandkids and hundreds of great and great, great grandchildren. So you might as well get used to it!" Patsy got used to it. Patsy usually could get used- to any- thing." She just took things as they came--even grandchildren. Little did I know, that morning years ago, when I prophesied, to BY MAX TRELL "You would do me a great fav- or," Pixie sald when he met the shadow-children, Knarf and Han- id, with the turned-about names, "if you'd help me carry some of these things." Safing this, Pixie dropped off his back the bundles he was car- vying. "My goodness, you poor little dear!" Hanid said to Pixie. "Why are you carrying so many bun- dle?" "Have to," said Pixie in a rough voice as he sat down on the bundle of twigs (one of the bun- dles, he was carrying) to catch his breath. "Hdve to," he repeat ed, "that's why I'm carrying them." * Very Good Reason This didn't seem to be a very good reason; or, at any rate, it didn't seem to explain anything so Knarf said; "What are you going to do with them?" "Make things out of em," mut- tered Pixie. "I'm carrying them because 1 have to make things out of them that's why I'm carry- ing them." v_ look dear," said Hanid, taking Pixie between her thumb and forefinger and lifting him up. He squirmed and kicked a bit and yelled "let me down!" But Hanid smiled "now you're telling us ex- actly the right reason why you are carrying all these different bundles. "I'm making them all into toys," he said, so Hanid sat him down again on her lap. "Toys!" Pixie nodded. "Playing toys." "Toys for whom dear? For child- ren? 'Nope. For bugs." This was the most surprising news and Knarf and Hanid de- manded to know what kind of toys for bugs he was going to make. Pixie took a deep breath. "I'm going to make see-saws, just the proper size for potato-bugs and small beetles. From my acorns (another bundle he was carrying) I'm going to make tops, spinning tops." "Yes! Yes! Theyre almost the shape of tops," cried Knarf. "Just need a bit of filing down and then the poppy seeds will make wonderful little marbles. Everybody knows that!" said Pix- ie more roughly than before. "Of course they do dear!" said Hanid. . "Now the dried morningglory blossoms I have in this bundle," continued Pixie, "are going to be made into baskets and boxes and they will be red and blue and some white." "And the daisies and dandelions with the petals torn off, what are Pixie O'Scowl Had A Big Load AND HE ASKED THE SHADOWS TO HELP CARRY IT h Complete Pixie sat down on the bundle they going to be made into?" ag. ed Knarf. "Into wheels for wagons," sig Pixie. "And the ball of cobwebs?" "Into strings and ropes. Tiel strings. for the tops, ropes for jumping and lassoes and swing and for pulling wagons and fo tying up things. And the pipe cones I'm going to make ing balls." Knarf and Hanid thought tng Pixie's whole idea of making toys was so good that they not only helped him carry the bundles yt also helped him make them. That was the most fun of all!
